“In my nightmare.” I finally caught my breath and cleared my throat. “Not in real life.”

Sighing, she laid back down, resting her head on my shoulder. She peered up at me, stroking my cheek with her thumb. “Sweetheart, Marco never blamed you and he wouldn’t, even if he were alive right now. I know you guys had your differences, but he loved you.”

I turned my head, meeting her gaze.

“And if he didn’t, he could have easily turned his back on you when the time came to protect us.” She shook her head. “I know the past was rocky but in the end, he was there for all of us. I forgave him. You have to forgive yourself.”

I lifted my hand to my forehead, massaging my temples, trying to knead away the stress. “Today I’ll be getting serious about getting rid of Felipe, I promise.”

“I know the answer to this, but can I do anything to help?”

Removing my hand from my face, I placed it on her cheek, laughing. “I don’t think I will ever get over how cute you are.”

She rolled her eyes, pursing her lips. “You’re changing the topic.”

I sat up and pulled her into my lap, straddling me. “Not at all.” Resting my forehead against hers, I smiled. “I just don’t think you need to be walking around with a gun in your hand, waiting for your uncle to emerge. At least not now.”

She snorted.

“Baby.”

She arched a brow.

“I got this, capisci?” I tugged her waist toward me, commanding her gaze.

She leaned forward, about to kiss me, but I flipped her over onto her back and climbed between her legs. She wrapped her legs around, attempting to pull me down on top of her.

“I may as well get up and get ready for work.”

“It can wait.” She spoke barely above a whisper. “I think there is something muchmoreimportant you want to do first.”

“And what is that?” I rolled my tongue across my bottom lip.

“I want you to do what you do best.”

“Hmm.” I squinted. “I do many things…best.”

She grinned, sliding her arms around the back of my neck. Pressing her nails into my shoulders, she dragged her hands toward my chest. “I want you to get the blindfold and belt.”

An evil smirk emerged on my lips. I rolled off her and slid to the edge of the bed. Just as I stood, my phone vibrated across my nightstand. I spun around, groaning. I got ready to silence the ringer when I saw it was a private number.

“One second.”

Hello?

Do you think hiring a whore to cover your ass will work?

He hung up. My grip loosened, and the phone fell to the bed. Her mouth fell agape.

“Who was it?!”

“Felipe.”

Isabelle’s face turned ghostly at the utterance of his name. As tough as she wanted to be about him, the truth was, it still petrified her just the same. Instantly becoming weak, she slumped over and rolled onto her side, facing the other way.

“Isabelle,” I whispered, “we knew he was alive.”

“I know.” She sniffled. “I just hate him so much!”
