“Do you need anything else from me?” She stood, shifting her weight back and forth.

“No, just fucking fix this by morning or else you’re fired.”

She nodded and sped out the door, fumbling as she shut it. He turned his laptop back and closed it. Taking a deep breath, he turned his attention to me and stalked to the couch. With a thud, he fell back on it next to me then ran his fingers through his hair in exacerbation.

I slithered into his lap, straddling him as he laid his head back. Pulling the blanket around me, I rested my head on his shoulder, covering us both. I pressed my lips against his neck, and he let out a sigh before he rolled his head to face me.

“I think Felipe might be behind this.” He chewed his bottom lip, then stared at the ceiling.

Noah needed to hurry up and find out what was really going on with Lindsay. I knew my uncle was capable of a lot, but something told me Lindsay was involved somehow. Not only did I have to accept Noah watching me closer but also had to observe my own actions since we had someone living under our roof who might mean us harm.

Searching

The following morning, I was up before anyone else. While sitting at the kitchen table eating my breakfast, Noah roamed in looking hungover. He had not so much as glanced my way when he meandered to the cabinet and took out a glass. Amused, I watched as he stepped over to the freezer and got ice water. Glass to his lips, he approached the table and sat at the end.

“Are you alright?”

“I was up all night,” he took another sip of water, “working on some things for Mr. Greco.”

“And did that involve drinking a lot of alcohol?”

“I’m not hungover if that’s what you’re thinking. I was just working out and that, mixed with the lack of sleep, makes me look like this.” He finished guzzling his water, then placed his glass down, silently staring at me for a moment.

“What?” I pushed my food back and propped my arms on the table.

He glanced back over his shoulder, then at the second door before leaning forward and whispering. “I got a little more info on Lindsay.”

“You did?”

He nodded. “After I finished with the business stuff, I worked on that for a while.”

“Did you see—”

Lindsay sashayed through the archway holding a stack of papers. She dropped them on the table and pointed at them. “I have the statement here.”

“That’s a long statement.” Noah snorted.

She rolled her eyes and picked up the top sheet, handing it to me. I silently scanned it. Noah stood and made his way over to me, peering over my shoulder as I closely examined the words.

I smiled and handed it back to her. “This is perfect, but will you run it by Valentino to make sure he doesn’t want you to add anything?”

“Of course, Miss Ayala.” Grabbing the stack of documents, she exited the room in a flash.

Noah strode to the refrigerator with his glass to get more water. He stood at the island, taking slower sips this time. Puffing his cheeks, he exhaled a large breath.

“I know he texted you about it.” I groaned.

“Yeah, I saw it on the news last night before Mr. Greco texted me an angry novel about it.” He shrugged and held his glass up as he came back to the table and sat down. “Hence why I’m working harder to find out the truth.” He glanced out the window and furrowed his brow. “I just don’t know why I can’t figure it out.”

“Hey,” I tapped my nail on the wooden table to get his attention, “it’s okay, you’ll figure it out.”

It was clear Noah was frustrated. I was too, but his irritation seemed more like a fixation. I wondered if he feared his job was on the line or Valentino would kill him. People worried about that quite a bit and walked eggshells around us most of the time. Noah seemed… different. Almost as if he did not care who Valentino was or what he was capable of. That was why I could not figure out why he was now acting nervous.

“No.” He shook his head, meeting my gaze. “You don’t understand. I can find out anything on anyone and I don—” He abruptly stopped and jumped out of his chair.

“What?!”

“Miss Ayala, can you cover for me for a bit?” He held his hands in a praying action.
