“It was activated. I can’t believe he heard me.” He sighed, running his fingers through his hair. “I hope the blood comes to my head again soon.”

“You looked like you wanted to die there for a second.”

“I still just might.” He shoved it back in his ear. “I’m leaving everything to you in my will.”

I snorted and bent down to pick up my sandals off the beach. When I stood up, I noticed Noah staring quietly at a group of trees and shrubs. I nudged him but he did not budge. His gaze was fixated on something I could not see.

“What are you looking at?” I tried to follow where he was looking and finally spotted something on an abnormal tree. The palm was different than the others.

“Isabelle.” Noah let out a loud laugh then pivoted toward me, turning his back toward the foliage. He expression instantly melted away when he was no longer looking in the other direction. Angst replaced his expression.

“What?” I wrinkled my nose.

“We’re being watched.” He spoke in a low growl. “Laugh.”

Throwing my head back, I guffawed as if he told me something hilarious. “Oh my God! That’s so funny!”

“We need to go inside now.” He muttered barely above a whisper. “Let’s keep the mood light in case we’re being watched or listened to.”

NOAH!My expression instantly turned sour. I curled my lip in disgust as I paced the sitting room. My eyes blinked rapidly after ripping my earpiece from my ear. I gawked at the screen of my watch, wondering if I had heard what my brain told me I did. It was no secret Noah and Laura slept together, but to talk about it aloud with my fiancée was too much. I knew he was not aware his mic was on, but it still made me cringe. I felt nauseated.

Joseph smirked and rolled his head toward the back of the couch peering up at me, trying to mask his laughter. We had been discussing our plan of action since Isabelle and Noah left to go walk around the boundaries of the island.

“Wonder what that was all about.” William lifted his fist to his mouth, trying his best to conceal a smile.

“You know damn well what that was about!” I huffed, pouring my third glass of whiskey at the minibar in the back of the room. I had taken two bottles from the plane.

William shrugged. “Maybe he just needs to be told he can date her, and he won’t be so verbal about her.”

“Or his vocal cords cut out.” I murmured. Placing the glass to my lips, I threw my head back, chugging the liquor with a glint of new hatred in my eye.

“In his defense,” Joseph shifted, forcing himself to sit up, “it could be much worse.”

“Not a solid argument, Joseph.” Shaking my head, I marched back to the liquor table and poured three glasses this time. I passed them off to William and Joseph then leaned on the wall near the fireplace.

“You know I don’t drink when I’m working.” Joseph bowed his head and leaned forward, placing the glass on a stack of books on the walnut, mid-century coffee table.

William waltzed over, snatching it off the books and placed a coaster down. He then moved Joseph’s drink to it.

“I just mean he’s a good guy who can protect her,” Joseph continued, “and if you actually got to know him you might find out you have a lot more in common than you think.”

“I think he’s alright.” William guzzled his liquor down then smirked before pouring himself another glass. “He has proven himself trustworthy at this point. At least, I think he has.”

“Every time I want to like him for Isabelle’s sake, something involving my sister happens.” Taking swigs of my whiskey, I meandered to the window, silently daring Felipe to show up. I was ready for a fight.

Immediately, my eye caught movement to the right. Isabelle and Noah were walking back toward the house with huge, uncomfortable grins displayed on their faces as they rushed toward the side entrance. It was the kind of expression couples have on their faces in public when they do not want people to know they are quietly arguing.

“What the hell?” I mumbled.

“What?” William sped over next to me, but they had already disappeared behind an outer wall.

Moments later, they sped into the house.

“We’re in here!” William called out.

As they entered through the archway, their happy faces had faded into broad eyes. Isabelle marched over, wrapping her arms around me.

“What’s wrong?” I stroked the top of her head, running my fingers through her hair as I kissed her forehead.
