“Good to have you back, boss.” He slapped my shoulder. "Been too long."

I slipped my sunglasses on, then checked my reflection in the tinted window. Rolling my sleeves to my elbows, I nodded. “Five years too long.”

“Maddie, I love you, but for the last time, I don’t want to talk about it.”

“I know,” she groaned, flipping over on her back on the chaise by the pool, “but whatwasgoing on with you and Vinny? I know something was.”

I shrugged. “Trust me, whatever I thought was going on wasn’t. It’s over.”

We’d gotten home from Florida an hour ago and she’d been pestering me since Antonio had watched us board a private plane home. We were now lounging out by my pool, and Vincenzo was the absolute last thing I wanted to talk about. I needed to get him out of my head once again, and this time for good. He left me confused, hurt, and angry, and now I had been questioning every moment with him.

“Why don’t we talk about Antonio and you flirting all the time?” I snickered, doing my best to divert the conversation as I rolled onto my side, facing her.

“What do you mean?”

“The calling youbabeand the winking and—”

“Girls!” my father called from the back porch French doors.

“Great.” I sighed, hoping he didn’t hear any of that on the cameras. “Yeah, dad?”

“Maddie, are you staying for dinner?”

“I’d love to,” she darted her eyes at me then him, “but I actually have to get home and do some things now that I have time.”

“Alright.” His broad smile faded to a serious expression. “Eliza, can I see you in my office after she leaves?”

I nodded. “Sure.”

“Thanks.” He closed the door.

She sat up, twisting to me. “Sounds like you’re in trouble…again.”

Running my fingers through my hair, I sighed. “As soon as I graduate, I’m getting an apartment, but there’s no point since I’m only here for the summer.”

She playfully swatted my leg. “Get one by yourself in Boston and I’ll come visit.”

“I’ll see how next semester goes.”

She stood, slipping her shirt and shorts back on, then sliding on her flip-flops. “You know, I was really looking forward to hanging out in Boca, but I get it.”

“Me too.” I just wanted to sleep now. My feelings were hurt, but I was trying my best to put on a brave face.

She meandered to the back door, through the house, and to the foyer. Twisting around, she leaned in, giving me a hug. “You know what I’m going to say.”

Taking a step back, I rolled my eyes. “I have nothing to say to Vinny.”

“I know, but communication is important.”

“Yeah,” I let out a breath, “but right now, I just want hot tea and a nap. "

“Call me if you need anything.” She opened the door and stepped out onto the front porch.

I waved before shutting it behind her and trudging toward the kitchen. On my way, I heard a hushed, frustrated one-way conversation coming from my father’s office. He must’ve been on the phone. I hurried to the sound, leaning on the wall just outside the door.
