I know it wasn’t the plan but thank you for sending her home. I’d rather her not have been there while you were taking care of that. I hope you tortured him on my behalf as well.

Him who? What the hell was going on? I shouldn’t have been eavesdropping, but I couldn’t help it.

Well, keep me posted.

Yes, thank you.

I hope you reconsider.

Enough time had passed, and I knew he’d be suspicious if I didn’t come in. I plastered a fake smile on my face and entered the office, waving.

Yes, she just walked in, so we’ll talk soon.

Great, thank you.

Bye.

“Who was that?” I knew exactly who it was but wanted to know if my father would tell me. I plopped down onto the couch in the middle of the room.

“It was Vinny.” He pushed off the front of his desk and strode over, taking a seat on the sofa across from me. “He was worried about you, actually.”

I curled my lip in disgust. “Why?”

“Just that your trip had to be cut short and Maddie had just gotten there. He wanted to make sure you arrived home safely.”

“He is the one who—” I abruptly stopped speaking. I didn’t know what my father knew, and I wasn’t about to tell on Vinny or myself. I redirected my question, hoping the lawyer in him wouldn’t notice. “What’s he taking care of? He said he has business.”

He narrowed his gaze, lifting his hand to his chin. “What’s that on your neck?” He slid to the edge of the cushion. “Is that a hickey?”

My eyes widened. “What?!” I leapt off the sofa, dashing to the mirror hanging over a buffet table. Bending close, I tilted my head, tracing the purple and red blotched area with my fingers. “No, that’s where Mr. Bernardi attacked me, and it’s just not healed.” It was in fact a hickey.Damnit. I had forgotten to cover it up with makeup. Oh, how I prayed he bought that.Shit. My heart was pounding. Gulping, I sat down on the couch.

“Anyway,” he sat back, stretching his arm out, crossing his ankle over his knee, “I’m not sure if Vinny will come to Turks and Caicos with us or not.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. Nothing in me wanted to see him any time soon anyway, and after everything, I just wanted to relax. I didn’t want to have to spend my entire vacation avoiding him. Grinning, I drew my feet under my body.

“You’re happy about it?”

Thinking I might have overdone it on the reaction, I shrugged. “Maybe it’s for the best if he doesn’t end up coming.”

Squinting, he cocked his head. “I see.”

“Well, it’ll be fun.”

He stood, straightening the creases in his pants. “Would you like to go grab some food?”

Eliza had been on the plane for a while and we’d finally gotten on the boat, taking it far out into the Atlantic Ocean, where some of my men were holding Nick. I stood on the starboard side, near the bow, inhaling a cigarette intensely as I watched for the yacht.

Silently, I cursed myself for being so harsh with Elizabeth. I was fighting everything in my head about her. While in her presence earlier, all I could think about was another woman who could never fully accept who I was, even if they thought they could.

I tried my best to erase today from my mind, but I kept thinking how unworthy of love I was. Nick had hurt her physically, I’d eventually hurt her emotionally, and I was going to take my frustrations out by making him pay…painfully. As I took drags from the vice that kept me sane, I closed my eyes for a moment, breathing in the sea air. It was always important. I calmed myself down to the point I could focus clearly on the task ahead. One of my friends always prayed before he took the life of someone else. There were times I prayed for my sanity, but prayers wouldn’t do shit for anyone today.

“Boss.” Dimitri’s hand landed on my shoulder.

Opening my eyes, I turned my head toward the sound, peering at him through my sunglasses.

He withdrew his hand, lifting his chin toward the white superyacht in the distance. “That’s it.”

“Get ready.”
