I nod my head in agreement with Enzo, that’s what I love about these guys, they always want to help others and make life better for everyone around them.

“Oh, hey, Graham is coming down tomorrow for lunch, you should join.”

“Cool,” I reply. Graham is a friend who has been in my life since I was a kid, I grew up with him and CT, his little brother, and we’ve all kept in contact with each other. My mom and dad were even still friends with his dad, I think.

We sit around the table and eat our dinner, and the moment my phone rings from my room I excuse myself from the table in a rush.

“Hey! What’s the hurry?” Archer asks, but I ignore them, grabbing my phone.

I answer right away, lying back on my bed. “Hey.”

“Hey.” I hear the smile in her voice through the phone and I know right then that no matter what secrets she needs to keep, however she needs me to be to make this work, I would do it just to hear that happy voice every single day.

I was a goner.

Chapter Sixteen

“Because of you

I can feel myself

Slowly but surely

Becoming the me

I have always

Dreamed of

Being.”

-Tyler Knott Gregson

Jane

“Jane, your mother is here.” The intercom echoes Lisa’s voice into the room and I frown at it while I finish an email. I type the end of the email and reach over for the intercom.

“Why isn’t she coming in?”

“She’s just arrived downstairs, Paul texted.”

I smirk at my assistant’s clever move and press the button again. “Thanks, Lisa. Remind me to give you a raise.”

“You got it, boss,” comes her reply. I take a deep breath and straighten my blazer, making sure everything is in order before my mother comes in. She can sense my unease from a mile away, which was why I was prepared to act my ass off when she got here.

She didn’t know about Warren. By my request, he was okay with keeping things quiet, but I was having a hard time with it. I had told Paulie because he was my driver and he’s already seen us together, plus I knew he wouldn’t go spilling the beans.

Lisa may have suspected, possibly, but for now, I was keeping it quiet in the office.

My door swings open and Beverly Leads comes in with a flourish. My mother was beautiful, she could have modeled instead of working her way up the energy ladder. But she had a brain that never stopped working, never stopped finding angles that worked for her and everyone else around her. Including me.

I loved my mom, despite how hard she made it at times. I never wanted her to be disappointed or upset with me.

I knew it had to do with how I was raised. With the whole butler and nanny bit.

My mother rarely ever took me to ballet practice or to school. She was a great provider, but that warm, comforting mother part that I desperately craved, not so much.

“Jane.” Her tone is tight, not bothering to mask the hard edge of anger she seems to be holding back. “You’ve been avoiding Jasper, according to Carl.”
