“What is it?” I ask.

He points to his lips. “A little taste of sunshine.”

Smiling at his request, I bend over and give him a small kiss on the lips. When I straighten, a sigh of relief escapes him.

“I love you, Sunshine.”

“I know.”

He gives me a quizzical look.

“You talk in your sleep.” I laugh lightly and bend down for another soft kiss. “I love you too, Aiden Clarke. So damn much.”

Chapter twenty-two

Aiden

Thedrugstheygaveme for the pain are still knocking me on my ass when all I want is to be alert and revel in the fact that my Sunshine is here. Lindsey leaving our apartment and the safety of her surroundings right after her incident at the bar is probably one of the bravest and scariest things she ever had to do. There was never a doubt in my mind she could fight through her fears if something motivated her enough. She always had it in her, she just needed to see it. The fact that it was to be by my bedside while I recovered makes me feel on top of the fucking world. Of course, she still has hard work ahead of her, we both do when it comes to our past and figuring out how to live our life together. But fuck, if this doesn’t prove to her she can really do it, I don’t know what would.

When the doctors examine me with Lindsey by my side, she’s pale, eyes wide after getting a look at my back and the incisions across my abdomen. I lean back and take her hand.

“I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t be shocked, but seeing what happened to you is really fucking with me right now.” Her voice is soft and scared, her chin trembling as she speaks.

I open my arms, silently asking her to lie with me. She looks unsure, not wanting to hurt me. I couldn’t care less. We need the comfort of each other’s touch right now.

“Come here, Sunshine. I promise I won’t bite.” Maybe joking will lift her spirits a bit. This isn’t the first time I’ve been almost blown up after all. I don’t tell her that, though, doubting it will bring her much comfort.

She gingerly lies on her side next to me and puts her head on my shoulder as I wrap my arm around her.

“There. That’s better,” I tell her, kissing the crown of her head.

“Are you sure I’m not hurting you?”

There’s some slight discomfort, but I couldn’t care less. Having her in my arms gives me all the relief I could hope for.

“I’m fine.” I nuzzle into her hair. “You’re exactly what I need.” God, I love the scent of her.

Liam comes in just then. Horrible timing, as usual.

“Hey now, none of that in here. I know you’re happy he’s alive, but let the poor guy have a rest.” He winks at Lindsey, and I roll my eyes.

“Well, excuse me, but there’s something about hospital gowns. They really get my blood pumping.” She smirks in Liam’s direction. I love that my girl gives as good as she gets. I chuckle and wince in pain. Maybe not the best idea just yet.

Lindsey sees it and moves to get off the bed, but I band my arm around her a little tighter.

“You’re staying right where you are, Sunshine,” I tell her. She cautiously lies back next to me, still careful not to put too much pressure on my side.

“Glad to see you in good spirits, mate,” Liam tells me.

“Do I get a bonus for being injured on the job?” I ask wryly.

He just laughs and shakes his head. “I think your bonus is next to you.”

Cheapskate.

He proceeds to tell me everything that happened after I blacked out. My body protected little Isobel from the blast, thank God. Though she had scratches and bruises from the fall, she was all-around fine. Her parents made it here in a few hours and she’s being discharged later today.

“Yeah, so those junkers weren’t just broken-down cars. The wily fuckers had explosives in them. Good thing they didn’t spot us till we were almost out. Otherwise, it’s safe to say we wouldn’t have made it past all the cars,” Liam explains.
