Why would she be jealous?

She had been the one to end their relationship and walk out on him, not the other way around.

But it was pretty clear that she was, and if she was jealous, it had to be because she still had feelings for him. If she didn't, she wouldn’t care who he was with.

Maybe she still loved him.

Then why leave?

Whatever.

Shehadleft.

And even if she did still love him, that didn't change anything.

“She’s doing okay; her parents finally arrived,” he replied.

“How did she do when you left?” Tom asked. “Is she coping okay with the idea that her parents are there to support her now, not you? She was getting pretty attached.”

Taylor hadnotbeen happy when he’d said goodbye.

She’d cried and screamed and begged, and walking out the door had been one of the hardest things he had ever done. But it was what she needed. He couldn’t be there for her forever, and the quicker they made the transition from her depending on him to her depending on her family, the better.

“She didn’t do well. In the end, Eric went in to give her a tranquilizer. We decided it was best that I don’t go and see her again. The more I hang around, the harder it is for her to make the switch.”

Although he knew that in his head, his heart still felt horrible for walking away when she needed him. He knew what it was like to have the people who you relied on disappear and the internal scramble to try to find a new safe place and sense of balance. He hated to put Taylor through that on the back of the trauma she had suffered, but what choice did he have?

“If you want to talk to Taylor again, you need to check with Eric. I didn't ask what he gave her, so I’m not sure whether she’ll be awake, or capable of being interviewed,” he told them.

“We need to talk toyou,” Chloe said quietly.

“Me? Why?” Fin couldn’t think of anything useful he couldtell them about the serial killer who abducted women and broke their bones. Maybe they weren’t here about that. Maybe it was another case. “Is this about Taylor’s case or another one?”

“Taylor’s,” Chloe replied.

“What do you want to ask me?”

“The precision with which he breaks his victims’ bones, and what Taylor said about him using machines and tools, makes us think we’re looking for a doctor,” she told him.

A doctor?

It made sense.

He had seen Taylor’s x-rays, and if he had to guess, it looked like someone with some medical knowledge had hurt her. A doctor, radiologist, nurse, physical therapist, possibly even someone with veterinarian knowledge, could have done it.

“You think it’s someone here at the hospital?” he asked. How creepy would it be if he had been working alongside a serial killer?

“Possibly,” Tom answered. “We thought we’d start here, see if there was anyone you can think of who might be capable of this.”

Fin considered that.

No one immediately sprang to mind.

“Anyone who might have taken a particular interest in Taylor and her case. Anyone who talked about the cases a lot. Anyone who you just get a bad vibe from?” Chloe prompted.

There was no one who had asked questions about Taylor other than those who were involved in treating her, and no one he could think of who had talked a lot about the case, but therewassomeone from whom he got a bad vibe from. Well, two people, actually.

“You thought of someone?” Tom asked, seemingly sensing his train of thought.
