“I promise to love the little shell monster forever.” He grabbed me, tipping me backward like they do in the movies, and kissed me hard. It might have been the hottest kiss he’d ever given me and my body throbbed with need for him.

“Tanner,” I whispered breathlessly.

“I need to go grab some water, angel. I’ll see you backstage soon.”

I watched his beautifully tattooed torso as he walked away from me and I couldn’t help but lick my lips, knowing that he was all mine. Forever.

Thomas’ phone rang, breaking the Cosmic God’s spell I’d fallen under. He talked for a few minutes before he hung up, running his fingers through his perfectly styled hair.

“Emmy, Tanner’s mum took her own life,” Thomas whispered to me.

“Shit, when?” I replied, wondering how Tanner would feel when he found out.

“She was released from custody today. She did it just after, apparently.” He pinched the bridge of his nose before he spoke again. “Did you know Tanner had a sister?”

I recoiled from the news as I stared at him. “What? No. Does he even know? He’s always said he’s an only child.”

“We need to find himnow. Matt, you’re with me. Let’s go.”

Chapter 40

Tanner

“Frankie, thatwasepic.Your songs have just played out all over the world. Emmy’s song played out all over the world. Thank you for that.”

“She ruined your proposal plans, though. I love that she asked you in front of everyone.” We both laughed, knowing that Emmy never did things the expected way. It just wasn’t her.

“I don’t care how it happened, just that it happened. I thought I was too broken to love and now I’m getting married.” I couldn’t hide the excitement from my face, and I didn’t even want to try.

Frankie grabbed my hand. “Tanner, you were never too broken to love. Your mum made you believe that because she chose to leave you. You couldn’t have changed that.”

I leaned back against the cool wall, hoping someone brought us some water soon because I was gasping. “I know. I do. It’s just hard not to believe everyone will leave me in the end. It’s why I started getting so fucked up all the time. If I pushed you all away, then you couldn’t leave me and rip me open.”

“Oh, big brother, when will you realize we won’t go anywhere? No matter how much you push, hurt, run, we’re always there. That’s what family is, and you are our family. Even when we’re angry with you, we still love you.”

We were interrupted by a loud knock on the door before a frantic Rylee threw it open, looking terrified. “Tanner, there’s a woman with a gun. Thomas… it’s a mess. There’s so much blood.”

I stared at her, wide-eyed.

“Thomas has been shot?” I asked, confused as hell.

“I don’t know. I think so. I think he needed help. I didn’t know what to do.”

Rob stepped forward. “You did the right thing. Noah, boys, go and check on him. Now! I’ll stay here.”

“We can’t. The boss told us to stay with Tanner and Frankie. That’s where we’ll stay,” Noah replied, squaring up to Rob.

“What, when the danger is out there? There’s a woman with a gun. What danger are they in if they stay in this room? I’ll guard the door while you find out what’s going on. You know this is what Thomas would want. Move now. Before it’s too late,” Rob yelled.

“Go, all of you,” I demanded. “Fuck, I hope he’s okay. Rylee, go tell Addi and make sure they have security with them.”

“Of course, Tanner.” She followed our security detail out of the door and I pulled Frankie against me, not caring how sweaty we both were, while Rob paced up and down.

“What the hell is going on, Tanner? Who would do this to you? To us?” Frankie questioned, her eyes full of fear.

Before I could reply, I heard the door go again, and someone coughed. Spinning on my heels, I found Rylee standing in the doorway with a tray of shots which she placed down on the table.

“Rylee, what the hell? We’re not meant to be taking drinks from anyone, and why is there even booze in here?”
