“Given that it happened nearly two years ago, and they never sold me out, I don’t think they will now.”

“We’ll see, Gray. You don’t have the best track record. Now get your ass in the car while we get your hand looked at.”

“They’re not broken, but they are going to hurt for a while. We will clean and dress the splits in your knuckles, and I suggest we strap your arm when you’re not on stage for a week or so while you have time to heal. I have to ask Mr. Hill, is there a reason you hit a wall? I see what you’re dealing with, and I need to check you’re okay. Was your injury anything to do with your OCD?”

I froze.

“Grayson. Is it okay that I call you Grayson?” the doctor asked.

When I didn’t speak, she continued talking. “I can arrange for you to talk to someone if you think you’re in crisis. Everything that happens here is confidential. You can trust us.”

“I’m fine,” I croaked out. “Taking my meds.”

“Okay, but you don’t have to fight this on your own if you need some more help.”

“He’s not on his own, doctor,” I heard Addi say from behind me. But I was alone. Surrounded by people all day, every day, and I’d never felt more alone in my life.

The doctor nodded, leaving the nurse to dress my wounds and strap my arm in a sling.

“Come on, we need to leave through the basement car park because the press is outside.”

Alone in my suite, I stared out at the skyline of yet another city, feeling more miserable than ever, itching to climb into the shower and wash away the pain when my phone rang.

Ivy

I answered on the first ring.

“Why are you in the hospital, Grayson? We saw it on the news. Tell me you’re okay.” Ivy’s voice wobbled as she spoke, and I knew she’d been crying.

“I’m okay, firefly. Just hurt my hand.”

“Don’t call me that. You don’t get to call me that. You broke my heart, so don’t think you can decide you want more and expect things to go back to normal. You walked away without a word.”

“You got married.” I tried to hide the hurt from my voice, but I knew she’d hear it. She knew me too well not to… even after all this time.

“Yes. We did,” she spat back, unapologetically.

“I miss you.”

“We need to talk. All of us. I need to understand. I need to know what we did to make you run.”

“We do need to talk, but I promise, you didn’t do anything.”

“Ethan then? Did he do something?”

“No, it was all me,” I answered honestly.

“When are you home? I don’t think I can wait months to see you.”

“I have a few days off before we fly to LA. How about I come home?”

“Come home to the UK?”

“Come home to you both, firefly.”

A sob fell from her lips. “Grayson. Please, don’t call me that. It hurts too much.”

“Can I come and stay?”
