“Hold on, I need to talk to Eth. In fact, can I call you back?”

She didn’t wait for my reply before she hung up and I was left feeling like my heart was beating on the outside of my body.

Ethan: Fine you can stay. In the spare room. But do not think you’ll get your hands or your lips on either of us.

Me: I’ll take whatever you’re offering.

Ethan: Don’t punch any more walls or I will hunt you down and hurt you.

Me: Why do you care?

Ethan: Because I still know how your mind works and you like to punish yourself. You need your hands. Don’t be so stupid.

Me: I’m sorting a flight home. I’ll see you in 48 hours.

I’dspentforevergettingready and then I changed outfits and now I was changing again. I wanted to look relaxed, but sexy. I wanted him to see what he’d given up and make him crave more. Instead, I simply felt like the woman he’d left, without explanation, because I wasn’t enough for him.

“Princess, stop. I can see the thoughts whirling around in your head. You did nothing wrong. Him leaving was all on him. You have nothing to prove.”

I burst into tears. It had been a while since I’d cried over Grayson Hill, but when he first left, I'd cried for weeks. For the loss of him from our lives and from our bed, but also the loss of the future I’d imagined with him in it. I loved Ethan fiercely, but Grayson added a new depth to our relationship. I thought we had a common understanding about what we were to each other and what we all wanted, but him vanishing like he did ripped the rug from under Ethan and I.

Yes, I’d known once the month was over, we'd have to change how things worked between us, but I’d never for a second thought he’d leave us, especially not in the middle of the night, after we’d both told him we loved him. That's what hurt the most.

Ethan wrapped his arms around me and let me cry. I knew he was hurting as much as me, but he found anger instead of tears and I didn’t know how he’d react to seeing Grayson again.

There was a knock at the door, and Ethan held out his hand as we walked down the stairs to open it together. A united front against the man who’d broken our hearts.

And there he was.

Grayson.

He looked older. His stormy gray eyes were less fiery, his body harder as if he’d been punishing himself in the gym, and his smile was missing.

“Fuck, firefly, you look stunning. Ethan. It’s so good to see you both.”

“You’d better come in. We wouldn’t want the press catching sight of you here. Imagine what it could do for your reputation,” Ethan fired out bitterly as he moved us both out of the way to let Grayson in.

Before he stepped inside, he turned, speaking to a man I’d not even noticed until now. “Thanks, Ed, you can go. I’m not leaving this house and if I do, I'll call you first.”

“Addi told me not to let you out of my sight. It’s more than my job’s worth.”

Grayson shook his head. “Enough! Take some time off. Sit in the car. I don’t care. But you won’t tell a soul where I am. Not even Addi. Otherwise, I will make sure you don’t have a job.”

“Understood. I’ll be nearby, but please don’t step outside unless I’m here. Addi would have my balls.”

Grayson’s guard left, and he stepped inside, closing the door behind him.

“Drink?” Ethan asked, still holding firmly to my hand.

“Please.”

“Kitchen.”

Grayson started to move, following Ethan’s command, and we followed him, but halfway there, he turned.

“I’m so sor—”
