I pressed send, focusing on where I could go and how I could help heal the crack that had appeared in my heart since yesterday when I heard a rustling behind me. I turned to see what it was, not expecting to see anyone else at this early hour. As I did, a hand pushed a cloth over my nose and mouth and the world went black.

Grayson

“No,no,no!”

Ethan’s cries ripped me from my sleep. It was still early, and the sun had barely broken through into the day. Thinking something was wrong with Ivy, as she’d had an upset stomach last night and slept in the other room, I pulled on some shorts and ran to find him.

“She’s gone.”

“Who? Where?” I asked, still half-asleep.

He handed me his phone, and I took a minute to read through the message.

“Ethan, what’s going on? I don’t understand.”

He pulled out a stool, slumping down at the kitchen island, rubbing his temples with his fingers.

“She was furious with me. All the stuff with Hazel, Jaxx, and the label. I didn’t tell her any of it. I didn’t tell her my plans to take over the press for the band. I thought she’d be happy because I’d found a way to give you the band, but on your terms. She thinks I didn’t think about how it would affect her."

I placed his phone on the counter and moved to stand behind him, rubbing his shoulders, trying to make him relax.

"The look of hurt on her face yesterday. She got angry. She never gets angry. She doesn’t have it in her. She always finds the solution. But she was so angry with me that it made her sick. That’s why she was in the spare room last night. And now this. Fuck, what have I done, Gray? Do you think she thought I chose you over her? How could she have thought she wasn’t enough for me? Where the hell has she gone? I mean, she hasn’t taken her purse or any of her things other than her phone. Where would she have gone?”

“She might just have meant that she needed a walk, an hour in a coffee shop, some physical space for a while until she calmed down. Don’t let your mind go to the worst place, Ethan. This is Ivy we’re talking about. She loves you with all her heart. She wouldn’t walk away from us.”

“She slept in the spare room. Do you know that in the fifteen years we’ve been together, we’ve never spent a night away from each other unless it was for work? Not once. She was so annoyed that she chose to be away from me. She’s gone. I can feel it. There’s suddenly a huge hole in the world where she should be.” He ran his fingers through his hair, staring up at me with panic filled eyes.

“Why didn’t you talk to her about your plans?”

“I didn’t want her to have to keep secrets from you. I didn’t want to tell either of you about it in case I couldn’t pull it off. I thought I was protecting her. Shit.” His head fell forward as he let out a long sigh.

“Let’s call her,” I suggested.

“I’ve tried. You try. She might answer if it’s not me.”

I found my phone on charge in the bedroom and tried to call her, but it went straight to voicemail, so I typed out a message.

Me: I know you’re angry firefly, but come home. We promised we wouldn’t run. You’re killing E. Please. Just let us know you’re okay. We love you x

Then I typed out a message to the band’s group chat.

Me: Anyone heard from Ivy?

Frankie: You lost your wife already, G. Careless!

Me: Her and E had words and she left before we got up this morning. I’m sure she’s just gone to blow off steam, but if you hear from her let me know.

Mav: Course, brother.

Walking back to find Ethan, I found him pacing the floor, running his fingers through his hair again and again. Opening my arms, he stepped toward me and buried his face into my neck.

“I can’t lose her, Gray.”

“Let’s give her the day. I’ve messaged her and asked her to get in touch. No matter how angry she is, Ethan, she wouldn’t want to worry us. Let’s give her time to calm down and she’ll come home. I’m sure of it.”

“And what am I supposed to do until she comes back? I can’t just sit here.”

“You need to breathe, husband. Let me make you some breakfast and a coffee.”
