Vorx grunted and turned me in his arms.

“Turik is strong and smart. He knows how much this”—he gestured at his side—“upset you and will do everything possible to avoid injury.”

That didn’t calm my fears, and Vorx knew it, based on his sigh.

“Come,” he said, taking my hand and leading me to the door.

“Where are we going?” I asked when he handed me my shoes.

“To Cassie’s before my skin grows over the thread holding me together.”

I hurried to put my stuff on. Outside, the cold air cleared my head a little and allowed me to think objectively. It was silly to worry about a grown man who’d lived thousands of lifetimes and fought hellhounds during each one of those. He was strong, and he was smart. Obviously, he could handle himself.

Yet, while I knew all that, I still feared losing what I’d found. I wanted to tell myself that meant a safe and happy home, but if that were the case, I wouldn’t be worrying so much. Not with Vorx still here, watching over me.

I glanced at the fey walking at my side. He caught my glance and smirked at me.

“Once the stitches are gone, I will show you I can carry you better than Turik.”

Unable to help myself, I snorted.

“We don’t need to make a game out of carrying me too. I enjoy walking.”

Vorx shrugged. “I enjoy touching your soft backside. Which one of us will get our way, do you think?”

I shot him a scowl. “Don’t even think about it. Once your stitches are out, you’re probably still going to need to take it easy for a while.”

Even though I knew the fey healed faster, I honestly didn’t think the stitches were ready to come out. However, when we reached Cassie’s house, she welcomed us inside with a knowing smile.

“I thought we might see you soon.”

Vorx shot me a smirk, and I rolled my eyes at him as Cassie led us back to the room she used for medical purposes.

“Kerr will remove the stitches for you. He’ll be right in.”

As soon as she left, Vorx stripped off his shirt and dropped his pants. It was so unexpected that I opened my mouth to ask what he was doing, only to stop at the sight of the row of stitches on his thigh. How hadn’t I noticed that until now? I remembered a bandage, but not the stitches. We’d even showered together for the love of—

Kerr walked into the room.

“I’ll do your side first.”

It didn’t take long for Kerr to pluck out the sutures he’d placed so carefully. After wiping both areas clean one last time, Kerr dismissed Vorx with a dry, “kill the hound faster next time,” and left the room.

“That’s it?” I asked as I watched Vorx dress.

“Yes.”

I wasn’t buying it. There had to be some kind of “take it easy” warning.

When we left the room, I saw Cassie.

“What are his limitations? Maybe don’t lift anything over fifty pounds?”

She grinned at me. “Trying to tell them not to do something is like trying to convince a toddler to take a nap. Except Vorx knows his body better than the toddler would.”

I opened my mouth to say more, but Vorx picked me up and started for the door.

“Thank you, Cassie,” he said just before letting us out.
