“Just because you’re a difficult patient doesn’t mean you were right,” I said, crossing my arms and looking up at him.

He smirked down at me and picked up his pace. However, being in our house again brought back the fact that Turik wasn’t there.

Although I said nothing and gave Vorx a sweet smile when he helped me out of my jacket, he knew Turik’s departure still weighed on me. And all the relaxing baths, desserts, and massages in the world wouldn’t have been enough to distract me from my worry. Yet, Vorx still threw each of those things at me during the rest of the day.

I felt like the most pampered female in Tolerance when he tucked me into bed after a fantastic steak dinner. Cuddled in his arms, I should have fallen right asleep. Instead, my eyes stayed open, aimed at a dark wall I couldn’t see.

“Sleep, Shelby,” Vorx said softly behind me.

“I’m not sure I can. We both know Turik wanted to be home by dark and only added dawn so I wouldn’t worry. Do you think something happened?”

Vorx grunted and continued playing with my hair.

“He will be home by dawn,” he said after a few heartbeats.

Doubt ate at me.

CHAPTERTWENTY

Dreams of runningin fear filled my restless slumber, and the slight dip of the mattress beside me was enough to pull me free. Groggily, I opened my eyes to see Turik.

“You’re home,” I whispered a moment before wrapping my arms around him.

Any relief I felt dissipated at the shock of touching cold skin.

“You’re never cold. What’s wrong?” I asked, pulling back.

He chuckled, his eyes dancing with humor, and rolled so I lay on top of him.

“Everything is right. I took a cold shower, hoping you might want to warm me.”

His hand smoothed down my back in a slow stroke that tempted me to give him what he wanted. First, there was something I needed, though.

“I want to know what happened. What took so long? Was it Nat? Was anyone hurt?”

Turik cupped my face and started peppering a thousand little kisses there, slowly melting away the fear that had solidified within me while he was gone. In its place, a warmth bloomed. Turik was home, and he wasn’t hurt. Far from it. Based on the hard length pressing into my thigh, he felt more than fine. He wasn’t even cold anymore.

A slow smile tugged at my lips.

“I think I’d like to turn the tables.”

“There are no tables in here,” he said, pulling back with a slight frown.

I closed the distance between us and tested the smooth texture of his lips while his hands moved slightly on my back. Encouraged, I opened my mouth and licked the curve of his lower lip.

A growl rumbled out of him a moment before he took control. With a feral hunger that stole my breath, his lips claimed mine. The first stroke of his tongue erased my reality and created a new one where only he and I existed.

He consumed me. Controlled me. But in ways that made me feel treasured and desperately needed.

Tearing my mouth from his, I panted for air, only to have it taken again when he nibbled along my jaw to my collarbone. Hot need burned its way through my center.

Desperate for more contact, I straddled his hips. Another growl rumbled through him, and he immediately arched against my core. I gasped and ground down on his hard length. His hands gripped my ass, keeping the pressure firm. Bolts of pleasure ran through me, building my need for more.

More contact. More skin on skin.

Leaning back, I tore my shirt over my head and watched the way Turik’s pupils rounded at the sight of my bare breasts.

Movement to my left called attention to the fact we weren’t alone.
