“You really think I would leave you alone in the woods?” His question is harsher this time.

Keeping my frozen nose pressed to his collarbone, I manage a shake of my head. Devin huffs.

“Oomph.”My back connects with something solid.

“Look at me.” Devin’s weight pins me to…a tree. I meet his narrowed eyes. The muscle in his cheek leaps as he swallows. “I will never let anything happen to you, Nova. I would never leave you somewhere unsafe. I’d never hurt you. You are, and will forever be, the most important person in my life. Tell me you understand that.”

I’m tucked inside his ski jacket, and it’s not enough. I could crawl inside this man, and I’m not sure it would be physically close enough. I’m obsessed. “I know.”

His lips meet my forehead.

“I know,” I repeat, closing my eyes and believing it, believing him, from the tips of my toes to the ends of my tousled hair. Devin Hawthorne is the love of my life and will be forever.

“Good. Now, two more things.” His head lifts. “Polar bears don’t live this far south, and it’s winter. Grizzlies are hibernating.”

My lips part to give him a piece of my mind, but his mouth has other plans, capturing mine in a kiss filled with laughter and passion. His hips grind, drawing heat to all the right places, even as I shiver under the onslaught of his kisses.

He finds my neck, his teeth grazing my skin. “If I didn’t think you’d turn into a popsicle, I’d take you right here against the tree.”

The prospect of freezing my tits off does not turn me on, but his body on mine? That’ll never get old. “There’s a perfect little cabin twenty feet away where you can take me any way you want, Mr. Hawthorne.”

“C’mon, we can start by sharing the tub.”

“The remainderof our weekend we spent wrapped in blankets or under the hot water.”

“Girl, you got more action in four days than I’ve had in one year.” Mari pouts, her red, sweaty face filling my phone screen as we video chat Monday night during her treadmill time.

My shower turns off, and I sigh. “And I’m pretty sure I’m about to get more.”

“Wait, he’s there? At your condo?”

“Yeah, he doesn’t have a place to live yet, and we just flew into town two hours ago. He offered to go back to the hotel tonight, but I invited him here.”

“So, are you living together now? That’s fast, Nov.”

“Nooo, he’s just staying a night or two.” I’m not sure what his plan is. It’s something we need to discuss more. “I wasn’t ready to let go of him. Like, I still wonder if I pinch myself, will I wake up?”

“Oh, please. If all that sex didn’t wake you up, he’s not a dream.”

I choke on a laugh and move to the kitchen to grab Dev a water bottle for his bedside. “Everything about him is a dream, Mari. I’m so in love with him. It’s scary.”

“I’m so happy for you. Jealous as hell, but happy.”

I’d be jealous of myself, too. “But you think we’re moving too fast?”

Dabbing her face with a towel, Mari frowns. “I didn’t mean it as a bad thing. You’re happy. You’re in love. That’s what matters.”

Is it, though? Anders and I reconnected, started dating, and got engaged in the span of one year. We would have been married before our second anniversary. Mom and Dad dated six years before they were engaged. Maybe I rush things. On the other hand, “I do love him.”

“He loves you, too.” I fumble my phone as Devin’s calloused hand slips under my tank, cupping me as his damp lips brush my ear. “Let’s get in bed.”

“Dev,” I breathe, covering his wandering hand before I flash my cousin. “What if I was talking to my parents?”

“They have four kids. I think they know what happens between a man and a woman.” His chest locks me in place, standing in the open refrigerator in a thin tank top and panties. My skin flinches when my thighs hit the cool stainless steel.

“Ewww, don’t remind me.”
