October | TWO MORE YEARS

“Wouldyou believe you’re the first Pratt to be married in a church since my grandparents?”

Shifting my gaze from my reflection to Aunt Amber’s, I smile. “Really? I don’t think I ever asked Dad. Where did Grandma and Grandpa get married?”

“Why at the country club, of course. All that old Pratt money, you know.” She drawls all high and mighty-like while giving her shoulders a little shimmy. “It was beautiful and elegant like they were. I have pictures back at home. I’ll scan some so you can see.”

Leave it to Aunt Amber, the wild one, to ease my jitters on my wedding day. “I never pictured a church wedding, but his parents insisted, and when we moved the date up, our options became slim on such short notice. Apparently, everyone wants a fall New England wedding.”

“With all the foliage, who could blame them?” Aunt Sam folds the clothes I wore before slipping on my dress. “And this place is beautiful. It’ll be a perfect day, Novie.”

Will it?

A symphony of laughter drifts into the room, and my aunts share knowing smiles. Aunt Sam tucks my clothes into my duffle bag. “We better go help your mom get those girls under control, or you’ll be walking down the aisle without a wedding party.”

Aunt Amber touches my elbow as I lift my dress to follow. “Take a moment for yourself, Suloinen.” My neck heats with the Finnish endearment she used on me as a child. I fan my face to keep the tears back and grasp her hand. “In another thirty minutes time is going to start flying. Plus, your cousins will drive you crazy the moment you step back into that room.”

I’m getting married today. I’m in a church in a white dress, surrounded by flowers and family, and the reality of such a monumental day hasn’t set in yet. Or maybe it’s set in, and that’s why I can’t get my brain to shut off. In a few hours, I’ll have a husband. I’ll be moving to a new state, and starting a new life.
