Loosening a deep sigh, I leave my coat by the stairs, and join Willa in the kitchen. “What happened?”
“You can’t even let me warm up before you start?”
She pauses mid-roll, her brown eyes narrowing. I avert my gaze, glancing around the open space for anything to distract me.
“Dev?”
I love and hate how well my big sister knows me. “Clem downstairs, too? I didn’t hear her.” Willa nods, setting the rolling pin aside. “No,” I grab the wooden handle and shove the pin back at her. “I need you to be doing something so I can talk and not have it feel like a therapy session.”
Though her chest rises with a sharp inhale, she resumes her work. I wet my chapped bottom lip and pull out a stool on the opposite side of the island. Sliding a fresh piece of gum from my pack, I fold the stick and pop it in my mouth, chewing as my knee bounces.
“We ran into Nova.”
The pin pauses, but for my benefit, she resumes.
“I know asking you to keep my secrets hurt your friendship. You never pushed me for details about what went on between us and—”
“You were dealing with bigger things, Dev. It wasn’t important.” Willa sets her pin aside and picks up a silicone brush.
“She was important to me.” I follow her movements as she uses the brush to paint the dough with butter. “I should have called her.”
“So, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say she’s still mad.” I nod. “And Palmer?”
“She’s not stupid. I left her at the table to run after Nova.”
“Oh, Devin.” She snorts a mirthless laugh.
My head hangs in shame. First for what I did to Nova two years ago, and second for what I’m doing to Palmer now. I brought her here, and then shoved my unresolved feelings for another woman in her face. I’m undeserving of them both.
“I need to break up with Palmer.”
“Devin, I don’t think—”
“I slept with her, Will. I slept with Nova, then I abandoned her and called mom.”
Paling, Willa sets a hand on her stomach as she winces. Edging off the stool, my socks hit the floor before she waves me to stay. “I’m fine. Just continue. Tell me everything.”
