Hoisting her bag over her shoulder, she walks toward an unrecognizable blue sedan. When did she get a chance to order a car? How did I not notice?

She knew all along she wasn’t going to ride with me.

The farther Nova backs away, the heavier my chest grows, breathing near agonizing. Using every ounce of self-preservation, I bury the mangled organ in my chest seeping through my eyes, and force a smile.

With a watery grin, Nova waves, opening the car door. “I’ll see you around, Hotshot.”

OCTOBER

Hotshot: Wanted to let you know I’m back in Pensacola. How is everything going in camp Pratt? Are your parents being understandable?

Spitfire: As much as I hated it, thank you for keeping your distance. Things have been touch and go here. My mom was more upset than my dad until I shared more about my relationship with Anders and let Willa tell her what she witnessed. And now she’s ready to fly to Wyoming and let him have it. My dad’s holding her back. Though I overheard a conversation he had with Anders’ dad. And it wasn’t pretty. Needless to say the twelve year friendship between the Danielsons and the Pratts is over.

Hotshot: Do you have any regrets?

Spitfire: Not a single one.

Hotshot: Missing you…

Spitfire: Me too.

NOVEMBER

Spitfire: Guess who’s got a full-time position as Assistant to the Athlete & Ambassador Marketing Manager with Burton?

Hotshot: Atta girl. I never doubted you. I got a fancy job working at a home improvement store. As you know, the minors don’t really pay much, gotta bankroll my Big Red addiction somehow.

Hotshot: Arch is flying me up for Thanksgiving. I’d love to see my second favorite set of dimples.

Spitfire: Second? I assume Briar is first and I can’t even blame you. Too bad I’m doing turkey day in New York with my Uncle Cole and Aunt Sam.

DECEMBER

Hotshot: Beach in December. I never thought I’d like other beaches more than California’s, but the gulf coast water is a whole lot warmer and so clear. Wish you were here to see it. *inserts picture*

Spitfire: Not. Fair. *inserts picture of snow pile around her car*

Spitfire: I’m sorry I didn’t reply the other night, I’ve been super busy with the Winter X Games coming up. Saw Willa, she told me they’re heading to Texas for Christmas to see Arch’s family. What are your plans?

Hotshot: Mom’s coming here for some sun and fun. How about you, busy big shot marketing assistant?

Spitfire: Christmas in Finland! Of all our big family holiday trips, it’s my favorite. Seventeen aunts, uncles, and cousins. I think Joseph (Cole and Sam’s oldest) is even bringing someone this year. Testing him out on the family to see if we pass.

Hotshot: It’s been three months since I last touched you Nova. I had a dream last night that you were here kissing me into the new year tonight. Will that ever happen?

Hotshot: You’re seven hours ahead of me and probably sleeping, and I’m drunk and rambling… I just miss you.
