“Oh, Peter, that is wonderful!” Working for a TV station has been a dream of his, and I’m glad that he might be fulfilling it. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I wasn’t sure I’d take it if they offered,” he says.

“Why the hell not?” I ask him.

“Because it’s out of state.”

I grab a packed dinner from the café at the hospital before leaving for the day. Someone punches me lightly on the shoulder, and I turn to my brother Dylan.

“Grabbing a single man’s dinner as well?” he says.

I grin. “Correct. Thought you had a hot date every night of the week,” I said. “What happened tonight? Has the city run out of pretty women?”

“Very funny,” he says. “As a matter of fact, I’ve been going straight home for the last few weeks. It gets old, dating.”

I raise an eyebrow. Something is definitely up with Dylan. He loves women, and they love him right back. The server comes from the kitchen carrying my packed sandwich.

“Hey, Rosa,” Dylan says, flashing her his trademark sexy smile.

“Hello, Dylan,” she says, her cheeks reddening. “We’ve missed you around here.”

“I’m overworked, Rosa,” Dylan says and moans dramatically.

Rosa giggles like a teenage girl. I watch the exchange with amusement. Dylan is a natural flirt, and I’m always surprised that he doesn’t have a girlfriend. He likes to say that he loves women too much to settle on one.

Dylan gives Rosa his order and then turns to me. “How is Ivy doing? Baby and mother doing well?”

“Yes, she’s fine. You saw her at the fundraising dinner,” I tell him.

“She was glowing.” Dylan gives me a shrewd look. “I sensed a serious attraction there. Any chance of a romance?”

I shake my head. “Ivy and I want different things in life, and romance is not on the list for either of us.” The lie leaves my mouth effortlessly. I’ve never been captured by a woman as much as Ivy. I have an insatiable need to know everything about her and spend time with her.

Dylan and I change the topic to work. My surgical patients usually come from Dylan and two other endocrinologists at the clinic. We both get our takeout food and leave together.

We part ways at the parking lot, and when I settle in the driver’s seat, I reach for my phone to check my messages. My heart starts to beat fast when I see a message from Ivy. It’s the first time she has texted me, and warmth radiates through my body.

Ivy: Hey Dr. Anderson, how was your day?

There’s something incredibly sexy about Ivy calling me by my formal title. That’s how I’m addressed all day long, but from her, it’s sexy and new, and I want her to whisper it into my ear while half-naked.

Me: Good. Had a challenging surgery, but it went well.

Ivy: I would love to hear about it over dinner. May I buy you dinner tonight?

I glance at the brown bag containing my sandwich, and it suddenly looks unappetizing.

Me: Yes, please, but I’d like to do the buying.

Ivy: I have a huge favor to ask. Let me do the buying.

Me: The answer is yes.

Ivy: You don’t even know the favor.
