“All my girls are now married. I’m officially old,” my dad says.

Molly and I laugh. “You’ll never be old, Dad,” I tell him. “You and Mom will forever be young.”

“I don’t mind being old as long as my girls are happy and their children are growing up well with no problems.”

I’m about to blame the tears in my eyes on my pregnancy hormones, but I notice Molly is also wiping her eyes. I hold my dad’s hand all the way to the church.

With Molly’s help, I make my way carefully to the church entrance. She lifts my veil and gives me a kiss.

“I love you, sis.”

“I love you too,” I tell her.

In a matter of minutes, I’m going to be Alec’s wife. I’m giddy with joy. I can barely concentrate on the arrangement as Molly and Lola make their way down the aisle. I’m impatient to see Alec. My soon-to-be husband. I’ll probably be one of those wives who always say, my husband.

I stifle a giggle.

“It’s time, sweetheart,” my dad says.

The wedding march comes on, and together, we enter the church. It’s half-empty as we kept our wedding list to our relatives and very few close friends. Then I see him. My Alec. He looks so handsome, and I’m momentarily overcome by emotion.

He smiles, and my world tilts side to side and then settles. The most amazing feeling of calm and happiness settles over me, and I feel as if I’ve come home. Alec has always been the missing piece of the puzzle. My soul mate. My love.

Epilogue

It’s not an exaggeration to say that the last two weeks have been the happiest of my life. Waking up to Alec’s sexy body every single morning has been a treat better than any gift.

I love living in Alec’s apartment. It’s so huge it feels as if I’m living in a house. The plan is to buy a house with space outside, but I have to say that for now, I love it here. I turn my attention back to the screen. I’m done with my story, but I hired an editor to work with me in making it the best it can be.

It’s probably ready now, but I want to go through it with a fine tooth comb one more time. A dull ache grips my back and spreads to my pelvis. It’s been there all morning, but now it feels stronger.

My phone chooses that moment to ring. I glance at it intending to let voicemail pick it up, when I see Alec’s name across the screen. I reach for it.

“Hey, babe.” My voice comes out as a moan. “Thought you were supposed to text.”

“I missed your voice. Are you okay?” he says.

I take a moment to catch my breath. “I’m good. You called in the middle of a contraction.”

“A contraction? Why didn’t you tell me?” Alec’s voice sounds panicky, which is thoroughly amusing. He’s a doctor, for goodness’ sake.

“Because they are still at least ten minutes apart. First babies take their time, and I don’t want to be stuck at the clinic. You know that.”

He takes a deep breath.

“I’ll tell you when they get closer,” I tell him firmly.

“Okay,” he says, surprising me by how quickly he agrees.

We say goodbye and hang up. I immerse myself back in my book, pausing only when a contraction comes. I’m roused from my work by the distant sound of a door opening. Footsteps sound closer, and moments later, Alec bursts in.

I stare at him in surprise.

“I’ve come to take you to the hospital,” he says, breathing heavily.

I laugh. “Isn’t it a little too early?”

He tries to smile. “Maybe, but it’s different when it’s your wife and baby. I’ll feel safer with you in the hospital.”
