“There you go,” Shay said. “You can officially leave my boys alone.”

“Please,” Jolene said. “I never leave anyone alone for long.”

“Don’t I know that firsthand.”

They both laughed like they did so much when they were kids.

Not My Problem

Kendra was deep into her budgets and her eyes were crossed. Accounting had given her what she’d asked for like they always did and then she had to move numbers around after talking to Ella and getting price quotes on equipment.

Not only that, vendors were calling that wanted Aiden’s spices in their stores and Ella negotiated that before Cade got involved.

As she expected, they didn’t want to talk to her. With Ella back part time, she was happy to send the email and wipe her hands of that project.

When her cell phone rang on her desk, she reached for it to see a Charlotte number. Most times she’d send it to voicemail if she didn’t recognize it, but since it was local, she didn’t want to take a chance it was something important or concerning her mother.

“Hello,” she said.

“Is this Kendra? Kendra Key?”

“Yes,” she said.

“I’m sorry to bother you. This is Clinton Monroe. I’m your father’s neighbor. I’m not sure if you remember me or not.”

She had no clue what this was about. “Yes, Mr. Monroe. We met a few times. How can I help you?”

He was probably in his fifties when she was a teen and had to visit her father on the weekends. Since she didn’t do it for long, she didn’t get to know anyone around the neighborhood of the house he’d purchased.

“It’s your father. The ambulance is taking him away. He’s hurt. He asked me to call you when he came to. I got his phone and found your number.”

She wanted to hang the phone up. How dare he pop into her life now after all these years and have her be informed he was hurt?

“What happened?”

“I don’t know,” Clinton said. “I know he’s on vacation this week. I was walking by with my dog and heard the yelling. I went to the front door and it was unlocked and your father was lying at the base of the stairs. I assume he fell. His head was bleeding and his leg looks pretty busted up. I called the ambulance and he asked if I could call you. I found his phone on the coffee table and your number.”

“Thank you for letting me know,” she said. “Do you know what hospital they are taking him to?”

“Novant Health, they said.”

“Thank you for calling me,” she said.

“I hate to ask,” Clinton said. “I know I haven’t seen you around in years. Kevin doesn’t say much about you when I ask, so I’m figuring you’re not close, but if you could let me know how he’s doing or if he needs anything? He’s always been a decent neighbor and all.”

“Is this your number that you called me on?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“I’ll be in touch when I find out something.”

She hung up. It was the best she could do.

But as much as she wanted to walk away and forget the call came in, it’s not the person she was or could be.

It would make her no better than her father.
