“Yeah, why?”

“I saw the shocked look on your face and then when it dawned on you what my aunt was asking.”

She sighed. “Did she really think we’d get engaged this soon?”

“It’s my aunt. She thinks lots of things.”

“I love you, Ivan,” she said. “A lot. More than I’ve ever loved another person other than my mother. But I’m not thinking weddings and babies just yet.”

His hand grazed her cheek. “I know.”

“I’m not trying to hurt you,” she said. She couldn’t read what was in his eyes.

“You’re not. I know you need to take things slow. My mind might be wandering down roads it’d never been before, but that doesn’t mean I’m ready to shift into a higher gear either. I’ll do stuff when I’m ready. When we are both ready.”

“Thank you for that,” she said.

“My aunt should know by now. She says we are perfect for each other, so she should have figured it wasn’t going to be fast.”

Kendra laughed. “That’s right. It will be on our timeline. Not hers.”

“I can’t believeyou’re going to be a grandmother and didn’t tell me,” Jolene said to Shay on Sunday.

There was no way they could talk much at the party yesterday and she had no intention of it.

“It’s not always all about you, Jolene,” Shay said.

“Yes, it is,” Jolene said, laughing on the phone. “I know how exciting it is to have that first grandchild.”

“It’s very exciting, but it was more exciting to keep the information from you.”

“Which isn’t very nice. I think everyone enjoys that more than anything.”

“Maybe we do,” she said.

“What is going on with Ivan and Kendra?” Jolene asked.

“What do you mean?”

“They went on vacation. They seem happy together. Perfect, one might say. I do good work.”

She shook her head. “Yes to all of that. But this is Ivan and he’s moving at his speed.”

“He’s probably analyzing everything out before he makes the next move. Silly, I should have realized that,” Jolene said.

“My son isn’t a robot,” she said.

“No, but he’s more practical than spontaneous.”

“There isn’t anything wrong with that,” she said. “Kendra has some hurdles to overcome, so you need to let them work it out on their own.”

“I know, I know,” Jolene said. “I just don’t like to wait.”

“No shocker there,” she said.

“At least I can focus more on Faith now knowing that Ivan and Kendra seem to be in a good place.”
