They paid him as a contractor and he filed his own taxes. It was easier this way and he logged his hours. Some months more than others.

“Will do,” he said. “Is there a reason you wanted the door shut?”

“I’m pretty sure my mother will be here in five minutes if you want to run.”

He laughed. “Liam forewarned me she knew I was coming. Nothing gets by her.”

“Or me. I saw you looking at Kendra a few times.”

This was nuts. “We’ve been working on this project together for a month. Of course I’m going to look at her.”

“Don’t play games. It was more than that and you know it.”

“Are you asking me if something is going on with Kendra and me?”

“Nope,” Ella said. “Though I love knowing something my mother doesn’t, I’m not ready to lie to her. But I’m letting you know if I noticed it then she will. Mason might have. Cade is always clueless.”

“You guys are all like your mother now watching everyone,” he said, frowning.

“Sorry. It’s like we are waiting for her to pounce. Or it’s more like we want to know before she does to rub her face in it.” She turned her head. “Looks like she just pulled in.”

“I’m out of here,” he said. “I parked out front and not in the back.”

“Because you knew as well as I did, she’d come here,” Ella said, laughing. “We are all onto her.”

“We are. You know how to reach me if you need anything.”

“I do,” Ella said.

“Where’s Ivan?”Jolene asked her daughter.

Ella looked up from her desk. “He’s gone. Was there something you needed?”

“I thought he was meeting with you this morning,” she said. Damn it. She’d gotten held up talking to Gavin about something. If she didn’t know better, she’d think he was purposely trying to keep her home today.

“We did. It’s over with. Do you want an update of what is going on? I’m sure Mason will catch Dad up, as Dad was really into this more than you.”

She wanted to stomp her foot. “No. I don’t need an update on that. It’s in the early stages and I know you guys will start slow. You always do. More so with Ivan doing things. He’s conservative that way.”

Ella grinned. “He is, but all he is doing is giving us the information. We are the ones making the decisions. You look annoyed. Is there something wrong? Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?”

She held back the growl. “Don’t play games with me. You told Ivan I was coming, didn’t you?”

“I had no idea you’d be here,” Ella said.

She pointed her finger at her daughter. “You guys better not block me on this. If you know something, then tell me. You did it with Liam and now I know what to look for.”

“I’ve got nothing to tell you other than what I did,” Ella said. “If there isn’t anything else, then I’ve got a lot to do. Kendra is busy too, so no need to bug my employee. We are meeting in a few minutes to go over things and she is getting ready for it.”

Jolene waved her hand at her daughter. “Fine. I’ll go talk to Cade.”

“You aren’t going to get anything from him, you know that.”

She turned and looked at Ella. “That’s true. Guess I’ll go bug Liam and see if they have a wedding date yet. Maybe Aimee. I think it’s time Brody and Aimee have another baby, don’t you?”

Ella rubbed her hand on her belly. “Not everyone wants to look like this, but I do know they enjoy trying.”
