He leaps up and runs into the fleeing maze of people, his gun out but held at his side.

He meets Constantine in the middle of the mass and the two of them start struggling over Dev. She stomps on Constantine’s foot and then Judas swings his arm up into his face. I chuckle at the surprised look on his face.

The younger idiot ran for the hills. He knows he’s gonna be in trouble.

Constantine shoots me one more impatient glare, holding his hand over his nose. “Fucker.” I flip his ass off and he stomps away, disappearing into the melee.

Devin skids to a stop next to me and I see that she’s got a bruise on her cheek. I glare at Judas. “How the hell did that happen?”

“Shut up!” She growls. “It’s not a big deal. You’re bleeding. You’ve been shot.”

I nod my head. “Yep. I have. Don’t worry, it’s just a flesh wound. Nothing major.”

Both of them help me to my feet and I feel the world tilt just a little to the right.”

“Hmmm. Weird,” I mutter.

Judas whistles for a cab but the man protests vociferously about no blood in his cab until Judas throws three hundred dollars at him and tells him to keep the change.

I lean into the backseat and Devin stares into my eyes, tears flowing down her cheeks. Her soft hand caresses my cheek gently. “You’re gonna be fine, Kane.”

“I know.” I lean into her shoulder and my eyes close. “This has been a real bitch of a day so far.”

Judas chuckles. “Nobody told you to catch a bullet with your body.”

I grin and slide lower, letting darkness catch me up in the softness of its embrace, pushing the pain back.

CHAPTER11

Micah

“Jesus Christ,”I mutter, staring at the big man standing in the doorway of the hospital room.

I know that face. And it’s not the second this time. This time it’s Kane’s brother.

“How is he?”

I stand and stalk up to the gigantic motherfucker, pushing him out the door so he doesn’t wake Kane. “How the fuck do you think he is? He’s been shot, asshole!”

He shuffles his feet but then he glares at me. “I didn’t mean for that to happen.”

“That’s great. Next time you send your goons and they manage to accidentally kill him, we’ll put that on his tombstone, you dumb motherfucker,” I growl, incensed. Devin cried for hours while Kane was in surgery. I can’t push that image out of my head and I’m about at the end of my tether.

“He’s my brother. I would never hurt him.” His dark navy eyes stare me down but I don’t flinch.

“As comforting as that is, I don’t currently believe you. And even if I was stupid enough to buy that load of horseshit, you threatened the woman we love. Forgive me if I find your moral compass questionable.”

He nods his big head, his navy eyes pained. “I didn’t tell Constantine to threaten your woman. I would never do that. She’s an innocent. She shouldn’t be a bargaining chip.”

I nod my head, slightly mollified. “At least we can agree on that.”

He nods to the room. “Can I see him?”

“Yeah. As long as you’re gone before Devin gets back. She’s napping. But she doesn’t need to be exposed to what you carry with you.”

He nods his head again and steps towards the door. “I understand.”

I follow him into the room with the beeping machines that made Devin break down, sobbing, until Judas took her home.
