More clicking and he groans. “That fucking guy is huge. What did you do?”

“I told him I’m not interested in their business venture and he could just haul his ass back to Detroit and tell my brother and the family to leave me the hell alone. I’m out.”

“Hmmm. I’m sure that went over well.”

“Not really. He threatened Dev.”

“Hewhat?” I yank the phone away from my ear. “What the hell do you mean he threatened Devin?”

“They know about our situation and they made a very specific threat against her. Against her job. And since that didn’t immediately work he then added a threat to her. Said it wouldn’t be good if the family didn’t protect her for me.”

“That’s ridiculous. We can protect her ourselves.”

“I know. I don’t think he was meaning it was a nice gesture. It was a solid threat against her.”

“Call Judas right now. Tell him this. Make sure that he doesn’t leave her alone for even a second. We’ll work out particulars later. Get a plan going.”

“Okay. That makes sense.”

“Right. Just make sure that you get to her before they do. Call him now.”

I hang up without bothering to say good-bye, listening to Jude’s phone ring and go to voicemail. I hang up and call again two more times before he picks up the phone. “Dude! What the fuck is your problem? I need some sleep.”

“Is Dev with you?” I ask, my voice breaking as I pace.

“Yeah, I think she’s in the bathroom. What’s up?” I explain it all again to him and he swears. I hear him hollering and his voice fading away. Seconds later, he comes back to the phone. “She’s not here. She said something last night about going to the Farmer’s Market this morning. She wanted some fresh vegetables to make a stew for dinner.”

“Shit!”

I slam my way out the door. “Hate to say this but he probably had someone stationed at Micah’s this morning while he talked to me. They like to cover their bases.”

Seconds later, I hear the door slam on the phone and running footsteps. “You got your gun?”

“Of course I do, idiot!” He grumbles angrily. “I’ll be there in ten minutes. I’m further than you. See if you can find her first.”

“Alright.” I hang up and stick my phone in my pocket. The crowds on the sidewalk become thicker and I’m darting in and out, my eyes desperately looking for her smooth, dark hair shining at me. I haven’t found her when Judas catches up to me.

“Anything?”

“No. I haven’t seen her. You don’t think…”

“Don’t borrow trouble, man. She’s not an easy woman to take if she doesn’t want you to. She’s tougher than old boots.”

“Flattering.”

“Just keep looking, she’s got to be here somewhere.”

I hear screaming ahead of me and my heart freezes in my chest. I know that voice.

“Fuck, no you don’t!”

People scatter and scream. Chaos rules as it feels like the whole world slows down and then hits fast forward.

“Dammit, Constantine! Get away from her right now!” I run forward and the man with Constantine points his gun at me, squeezing the trigger. I feel the bullet slam into me and drop to my knees.

“Shit,” I mutter. “This is why you never bring newbies, Constantine!” I lift my hand to hold my shoulder, groaning.

Judas skids to a stop next to me. I wave him ahead wildly. “Get her. Don’t worry about me. It’s just a damn flesh wound.”
