"He's the best."

But he's not Jameson, I want to say, but the words get caught in my throat. Truthfully Eric is a fantastic guy. My parents adore him, Ellie adores him, my friends love him, I definitely love him. But how do you make a comparison when you've already experienced perfection. I shake the feeling away because Eric is good for us, and Jameson is leaving. He always will be, another mission, another home base.

I get up to make my way to the bar for another Pina colada, the same time my phone rings.

"Hey, boo. Are you missing me yet?"

"Karly Jo, you know that I miss you."

"How's my beautiful little spawn?"

I laugh, "She's great, having the time of her life."

"Good! I just wanted to check in on you guys."

"We're great. Everything is great."

"And Jay?"

I smile at the sound of his name, "What about him?"

"Han, I'm not a dumbass. In case you forgot, I was with you the day you met his pompous ass. I know all his tricks to reel you back in."

"It's not like that. We're just friends. It's only about Ellie, remember?"

I hear Karly scoff, "If you say so. Just remember the fine specimen of a doctor you got waiting for you back home. When Jameson tries to mesmerize you with his charm, punch him in the nuts, just once. For me."

I laugh, "I will, boo. I love you. I'll see you on Sunday when I get back."

We hang up as I notice a text coming through.

Jameson- Who knew a little five-year-old could be so wild? I'm going to sleep good tonight.

I laugh a little to myself before typing out a reply.

Hanna- She's exhausting. Good luck.

Jameson- Can I say one thing, and you just pretend I didn't?

Hanna- Sure.

Jameson- Ellie is like having a tiny piece of you. I see you in her in everything she does. It's like having you here when I can't.

I type out a response and delete it. Over and over again until hours have gone by, and Jameson is standing at my door. Ellie is against his shoulder, asleep.

"Just put her in my bed," I whisper, wishing I would've put on something less scandalous. Not that I feel slutty, but a silk pajama set isn't the most appropriate thing for my ex-boyfriend slash baby daddy.

I sit opposite Jay at the tiny table, trying not to make eye contact. Afraid he will see something and it not be what he remembers. I did have a baby. My body isn't the same. Damn these pajamas right now.

"Did you have fun?" I ask, drawing my thoughts to something else.

"Yeah, we did. She's a handful."

I look over at Ellie, zonked out in the bed, her hair a blonde rat's nest, where I yanked her ponytail down.

"Why didn't you respond to my text?" He asks, shifting a little closer to me in his chair.

"I didn't know what to say."
