Finally, I sit up, pushing both hands back across my shaved head. I contemplate going for a run, but instead, I decide I'm done running. I grab my keys and a duffle bag and start slinging clothes inside. I want to be the man that makes her smile instead of the boy who caused her tears.

I slam the car door shut and listen to the engine purr.

You can do this, I tell myself. If nothing else, I'll at least get the closure doc said I needed.

I drove through the night, only stopping for fuel and to use the bathroom. The sun peaks up over the horizon, and I pull into the closest restaurant for a coffee and some breakfast.

I can't believe I'm actually going to find her. I sit in an empty booth near the door, pulling out my phone to check my messages.

Just a few from some of the guys back at the academy, I shake my head, pulling open the app I try to avoid.

I type her name into the search bar, her profile filling the screen, and a new picture?

Her smile is wide, a guy behind her with his arms wrapped effortlessly around her waist. The ache in my chest causes the air to leave my lungs, and my hand begins to tremble.

She's happy.

What the fuck am I doing? This is what I wished for her. A happy life without me and my past dragging her down.

No.

I shut the screen off, shuffling quickly out of the restaurant to my car and back to Colorado, where I can't hurt her.
