Austin pressed his lips to hers, melding his mouth to her own until a roar filled his ears. The blood in his veins hammered through his system, raging with excitement and arousal as euphoria took control of his actions.

Her back arched as his palm caressed the length of her bare thigh beneath the blanket. She nibbled on his bottom lip and released a moan. “I see you,” she answered before shifting to straddle his body. The blanket fell to the floor and the pressure and friction mounted—each prick of her fingernails against his skin granting permission to explore, to move on from the past, beyond forbidden love.

A pounding on the door stalled his heart.

“Who the fuck?” Casey tumbled from his lap, snatching the blanket from the floor. She wrapped the material around her shoulders and wiped her lips with the back of her hand. “It’s one in the morning!”

And I’ll fucking murder whoever it is...

Austin rose from his seat and stepped to the door, pressing his right eye to the peephole. “Oh, no fucking way!”

His fingers gripped the deadbolt, turning the lock to yank open the door. A hand snaked inside, gripping the door frame as the stale fumes of weed and alcohol billowed in.

“Damn! Did I get the wrong apartment?” His words slurred together as his fingers raked through a mop of greasy black hair. His unfocused eyes scanned the room until a wide smile crept along his lips at the sight of Casey. “Aww naw, there’s blondie.” He wagged his finger in her direction and leaned forward.

Austin’s palm slammed into his chest. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” He pushed him back into the hallway.

“Hey, hey, it’s cool, bro!” The man stumbled and staggered across the hall, gripping his own apartment doorknob. “I didn’t know she had a boyfriend.”

“Yeah, well, she does! So, stay the fuck away from her!”

A manic burst of laughter filtered through the hallway as something fell and crashed inside his apartment. Austin stepped back inside and slammed the door, securing the deadbolt with fervor.

The desire that fueled his passion moments ago subsided, replaced only with a fierce sense of protection. Austin tapped his fist against the door and turned. Casey sat, perched on the couch, her small body buried beneath the tattered blanket.

“I told you he was weird.” She shrugged, and the blanket fell.

Returning to the living room, Austin tugged Casey back to his body. He sighed and pressed his nose to her hair as she snuggled into his chest. “Case, that wasn’t just weird. That was...” He shook his head, tightening his grip. “That could have been really bad if...”

If you were alone, what would he have tried to do to you?

Her gaze lifted, peering into his eyes.

“I don’t think you should live here alone.” Austin shook his head, wrinkling his nose.

“But my lease isn’t up until the end of June.”

Of course, it isn’t.

He nodded, gazing around the apartment. His eyes landed on the sofa behind her, the memories of moments ago jump starting his heart.

“Well, how do you feel about a more permanent roommate then?”

“I mean, you did just tell him you were my boyfriend, so...” She snickered and pressed her lips to his chest.

“Boyfriend. Fairy godmother... same thing.”

Call me what you want, Casey girl. I’m not leaving.
