CHAPTER SEVEN

Casey

Casey opened her politicalscience textbook as the first day of class loomed. As she stared at the course syllabus, her eyes glazed over reviewing the class description and demanding summer schedule.

“So, what the hell evenispolitical science?” She frowned and tossed the syllabus aside, flipping the pages in the text to chapter one. A whine escaped her lips as she read the first paragraph—the core concepts and vocabulary instantly jumbling in her brain. “Austin, you’re going to think I’m such an idiot...”

Casey dropped her hands to the cushion with defeat. Her palms raked over the material as the memory of her and Austin’s first night as roommates reclaimed her mind.I can’t believe I did that. She snorted, recalling her bold words and even bolder actions.I can’t believe you let me do that.

For the last several days, Austin had kept his distance—happy to cuddle, happy to hold hands and continue their flirtatious banter, but he hadn’t kissed her, or even brought up that first night together.

He’s conflicted, still unsure of what or who he wants.

Casey huffed out a breath and tugged at the note she’d found from him on the kitchen counter, resting it atop her heart.

Case–

I didn’t want to wake you. I forgot I had an appointment at nine to meet with a realtor. I need to start looking at locations for the firm. Keep the door locked until I get back, okay?

Austin

Her phone rang. Shoving the textbook from her lap, Casey tappedaccepton Mavis’s name.

“Casey!” Her former roommate’s excitement reverberated in her eardrum.

“Hey, Mavs!” Casey grinned, putting her best friend on speaker. “How’s California? How’s Josh?”

“It’s good! He’s good! We’re all good!” She giggled, the happiness with her new life evident in every exclamation.

“You sound really happy.” Casey smiled and dropped her gaze to her lap.

“I am really happy, Case... but I miss you! How are things? How’s Chicago? How’s...” She hesitated.

“Oh, come on, you can say his name.” Casey rolled her eyes. “Austin.”

Mavis snorted. “Austin, apparently your new BFF now, right?”

“Oh, stop it. That’s not fair and you know it!” Casey giggled, falling flat on the couch. She stretched her legs out and crisscrossed her ankles.

“It is too! He just like, moved in and stole you away from me!”

“Need I remind you that it wasyouwho moved across the country?”

Well... I guess he did too?

“That didn’t mean he had to move into my old apartment or into my old bedroom. It’s kinda weird, isn’t it?”
