She shook her head, “Nah, I’ll leave that kind of adventure to the youth.”

I giggled.

The rest of the morning passed peacefully. There were a few more rapids but none as intense as The Big Kahuna.

As we made our way toward the landing site, I was a little sad. Granted, I’d been slightly manipulated into the trip but I’d actually enjoyed myself, and now it was over. Other than the calendar shoot coming up in a few weeks, I didn’t have any reason to be near Jacob. And I knew he had a few more overnight trips planned before the end of the season. I wouldn’t see much of him, and that thought made my heart hurt a little.

Mia and John were at the dock to meet us as we maneuvered the rafts to the shore.

“Ahoy,” she shouted as she waved to us.

“Seriously, Mia? Ahoy? We aren’t a ship.”

She tugged on the front of the raft. “It sounded funny to me.” She smiled at us.

“Hey John!” I yelled in greeting as he came down to meet the other raft.

John tugged on the other raft bringing it up onto shore.

Mia and John met on a snowmobiling trip for a bachelor party. The irony was that the bachelor party was for Mia’s first love. Falling for John had not been on Mia’s agenda. He worshiped her and loved her for everything she was.

“How you doin’, Camille. Jacob suckered you into the trip?”

“It was a fair trade. I got a place to live, and he helped me recruit the athletes for the calendar.”

He looked at Jacob, laughing. “I think she suckered you, Jacob.”

The twins climbed out, and Mia helped them get their life vests off.

The sorority girls practically fell out of the raft, staring at John’s tall, dark, and handsome good looks.

“I’m so glad I’m immune to you. Can you burp or something? Your perfection is blinding.” I rolled my eyes at him, and said to the girls, “Don’t let his looks fool you. He beats small animals and children.”

They both blushed.

He smiled and shook Jacob’s hand. “Good trip?”

“Yeah. I think everyone had fun.”

Mia came back over to the group. “We have you all set up at the Wort Hotel. It’s a nice place to relax, decompress from the trip and then…” She looked at Stephen and the girls. “I think we are taking the three of you to the airport tomorrow?”

He nodded, and the girls tucked in under his arms. “That’s right. You’ve made it a really memorable trip for us, Mia.” He looked at Jacob. “Jacob.”

Jacob nodded. “It was our pleasure.”

Cody set about loading all the gear onto the truck, and I hopped into the van with Mia and all the guests, to head back to Jackson. Jacob and John stayed behind to help Cody.

After hugs and promises to keep in touch, I told Nora that I was seriously considering her idea to teach.

She grabbed my cheeks and kissed my forehead. “You were meant to ride, my dear. Share that passion with others.”

Everyone checked into their rooms, and Mia and I got back in the van to leave but she didn’t immediately start the vehicle. We sat staring at the entrance to the hotel. “You look really happy, despite the fact that your world turned upside down not too long ago.”

“I had a really good time. Better than I thought I would.”

“Were you nice to Jacob?” she asked, her voice lilting.

“I’m always nice to Jacob.”
