Hours later, I heard her before I remembered where I was.
“Yo, yo, yo! Camille, are you here? Wake up. I need your help with getting some of the guys at the airport,” Mia yelled, her impatient voice echoing through the silent apartment.
I jolted awake, and whispered, “Oh, shit.”
Jacob put his finger on my mouth, and I tried not to giggle.
Jacob and I were surrounded by darkness, the blackout shades on the windows preventing us from even guessing what time it was.
“Camille!” I heard her open my old bedroom door and shout my name.
Jacob’s door flew open next. I buried my head under the covers just in time. Mia asked, “Jacob? Are you awake? Did Camille stay here last night? She wasn’t in the apartment this morning.”
“Seriously, Mia? I could have been mid-action and you would have disturbed my mojo.”
I tried not to laugh under the covers.
“What a lovely way to talk about the slaughtered lamb under your sheets. Lock your door next time. Have you seen Camille?”
His chest rumbled with restrained laughter. “No.”
“Didn’t you guys go out last night? Who was she with? She probably went home with….”
Her voice trailed off as she went into the kitchen, and he whispered, “Stay down.”
I tucked myself closer into him and he pulled me close with his arm above the covers. I kissed his chest.
Suddenly, my phone rang on his night stand. He lunged for it, squishing me in the process but not before Mia heard it ring. She strolled back into his room. “I guess you’re going to tell me that you picked up the wrong phone last night?” I could hear the smile in her voice.
With a stern, yet teasing tone, she directed me, “Show your face.”
Slowly, I pulled back the covers, leaving the top just below my nose. I mumbled into the comforter. “Hi.”
She rolled her eyes. “It only took you a million years. Get up. I need help with the luggage for the men you brought here.” She pointed her finger at me, then at Jacob, and before leaving the room, said, “Don’t screw it up this time.”
