“Geez, Mia. Are you serious?” I was shocked. “You’ve never been mean to me about my past before, why now?”

“I know you haven’t been very selective, but did it have to be Brett?”

She pursed her lips together and watched the road.

I blinked. “Oh, my god. I can’t…I don’t even…wow!”

She inhaled. She spoke softly, “I didn’t mean it like that. I’m sorry.”

We rode in silence the rest of the way to her house.

She parked the truck on the side of the house and turned off the ignition.

I looked at my lap. “I’m sorry about how I treated Brett. I’m sorry I didn’t consider that he was going to be your brother-in-law, and it was a little close to home.” I rolled my eyes and shook my head shoulder to shoulder. “I mean, Jacob is a little closer to home, but I love him. I’m not going to hurt him again, and vice versa…I think.”

She shook her head and looked at the roof of the cab before turning to me. She took a deep breath. “I know. It just caught me off guard. All of it. I thought it was in the past. Brett, that is. I didn’t realize that he would be so happy to see you. It’s been a busy morning.”

We both smiled at that. “Uh, it certainly has.”

John pulled his SUV in behind us. Mia took the keys out of the truck’s ignition, and said with a sigh, “You should get ready for dinner.”

I nodded and let myself out of the truck. It was going to be a long week.

*

I’d managed to get out of the dinner that night with the excuse of needing to get ready for the week ahead. I think Mia was secretly happy I’d decided not to join them. Mia and John had joined Jenna to entertain the guests, and Jacob reported back that Jenna was more than happy to fill my flirtatious shoes.

He’d showed up after the dinner and made himself comfortable on my bed, laying sideways, propped up on his elbow while I worked at the pre-fabricated wood desk Mia kept at her apartment.

He’d stuffed a pillow under his arm. “I missed you at dinner.”

I’d turned in my chair. “Jacob, I need to tell you something.”

He’d sat up. “Uh, should I be worried?”

“No. I’m really happy that we are, well, whatever we are.”

He’d patted the bed next to him. “Come here.”

I’d sat next to him on the bed, and entangled my fingers with his.

“What is it?” he’d asked.

“It’s about Brett.”

“Is he your secret lover?” he’d teased.

I’d smacked him lightly on the shoulder. “Don’t joke.”

He’d rubbed his shoulder in mock pain. “I’m sorry. It’s just, I probably know what you’re going to say and it doesn’t matter.”

“It doesn’t bother you?”

“Of course, it bothers me. You and I are new again. I haven’t exactly been a saint, and neither have you. But I think that’s changing, don’t you?”

I’d laid back and he played with my hair. “I do. But I wasn’t kind to him, and it reminded me of how that girl might have felt at the bar. We’ve hurt other people in our attempts to hurt each other.”

He’d nodded. “I’m making apologies.”
