I’d inhaled and exhaled deeply. “I need to start too. Making apologies.”

“Camille, I want to be with you. Just you. Maybe we are both just getting back to being the people we want to be, with each other. We’re going to muddle through for a bit.”

“Did Jenna flirt with you tonight?” I’d asked.

“Even if she did, I didn’t flirt back.”

I’d whispered, “I’m sorry for years of miscommunication.”

He’d kissed me sweetly and we made love in the attic apartment of my new life.

And now I found myself at the photoshoot, staring at a wall of men. A bubble of testosterone expanded around us, and I knew I was over living a vapid lifestyle. I couldn’t breathe. This much maleness was more suited to Jenna, who was most definitely on the prowl.

Jacob was just as sexy, but the space he filled seemed so much calmer, less electric. He made his way across the lawn toward me. The swagger, I knew, wasn’t intentional but caused by a flare up of pain in his leg. “Looks like you have your hands full.”

I glanced up at him. “With the project? Or Jenna?”

He looked over his shoulder. “Both.”

I shrugged. “It’s all good.”

We smiled at each other before I turned to the rest of the group. “OK everyone, let’s all take a seat at the banquet table and review the schedule. Some of you don’t need to be back here until tomorrow. The rest will be getting started here in just a moment.”

Jacob left me to take a seat at the table.

Brett took a seat next to me, and said quietly, “Can we have dinner tonight?”

A quick glance toward Jacob showed me that he was engaged in conversation with the photographer.

I didn’t make eye contact with Brett. “I don’t think that’s a good idea, Brett. I’m kind of seeing someone.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, Jacob turned his head to look my way. His eyes quickly darted to Brett, then back to me. His expression was unreadable.

“Just a drink?”

This time I did turn to him. “I’m really sorry.” The rest of the men were taking their places at the table. I added quickly, “I had a good time with you, Brett but I really can’t see you while you’re here.”

He leaned back in his chair, a look of confusion on his face.

To the group, I said, “OK, let’s get started.”

The table wobbled when some of them put their elbows on it.

“We’ll start with the spring and summer months, April through October. We’re supposed to get some early snow again later this week so we’ll do November through March when that happens, and only use the snowmaker if needed.”

They were all reading through the call sheet. One of Ford’s friends asked, “Where do we change?”

Jenna answered from the end of the table. “We set up one of the downstairs offices to be a changing room. Under your name, you’ll see a description of what should be in your garment bag. All of the garments are labeled with your name and the month you’ll be featured.”

Some of the men laughed. One of them commented, “July says, ‘derriere shot in water,’ and there isn’t an outfit.”

All eyes turned to him.

I wasn’t sure if he was truly shocked, or pretending. But then he erupted in laughter and chortled, “Ladies, you are in for a treat.”

With that, we were back to work…everyone except for me.

My job was, well, nothing at the moment. Jenna, the photographer, and the various other support people were handling things and I was an unnecessary distraction.
