He came to me. “Merry Christmas, sis.”

“Jacob?” I turned and saw him down on one knee in front of me.

“Camille, we know. We know we should be together. I want to start living a life with you, and I want to start now. Will you please marry me?”

“Marry you?”

“If we’re doing this, we’re going all in.”

“Whose house is this?”

Realizing I wasn’t giving him an answer, he stood. “Yours. Ours.”

“You bought it?”

“For us.”

“I…I don’t need this, Jacob. I just need you.”

“And I just need you. But I also know how much this house, and this property means to you.”

“I don’t need you to swoop in and save me.”

He grabbed my cheeks. “I’m not trying to save you. I want to be with you. I don’t want us to play games or question the past or date. We’ve wasted enough time. And now, I just want us to move forward.”

I looked at the guests, all waiting for my answer. “You all knew?”

Mia spoke for the group. “It was supposed to be tomorrow but then you freaked out on Jacob and, well, drastic times and all.”

Tears leaked out of my eyes. “Mrs.Brooks?”

“We love you, dear. You do what you need to do.”

John’s parents looked like they found all this highly entertaining.

When I finally answered, it was with certainty and conviction. I knew that Jacob was right: I might continue questioning what we did wrong all those years ago, instead of accepting what we’d done right, if we didn’t do something drastic, like he said. We’d loved each other and we still love each other. That was enough for me. “I’ll marry you. Yes, I’ll marry you.”

Jacob scooped me up and twirled me around. Cheers and laughter surrounded us.

Mia appeared by my side, whispering, “One more thing.”

She took my hand and led me to my old bedroom.

On the bed was a simple lace vintage-style wedding dress. The V-neck, cap-sleeved design would accentuate my small waist. The cream-colored lace was a perfect complement to the romantic setting Jacob had set. Gently, I lifted it from the bed. “It’s beautiful,” I said, overcome with emotion at the sight of my wedding dress.

“Jacob found it in a store in San Francisco a few weeks ago. He said he could picture you in it and he knew.”

“He did?”

“He loves you so much.”

I looked back at the dress and gently ran my hands over the intricate lace. “It’s gorgeous.”

She took it from me, and carefully undid the buttons running down the back. “C’mon, let’s get you in it.”

She dressed me with care, and love, as a sister might do. Soft music seemed to be playing in my head as I let her guide me into the dress.

While she buttoned me up, I asked her, “Have you heard from my mom or dad?”
