She sighed. “Your mom wishes you the best, and said she would try to get out here for the New Year.”

“Of course.” I hid my disappointment.

“Your dad is probably on a plane right now.”

I turned abruptly. “He is?”

She laughed. “Woah, careful, I wasn’t done buttoning you up. Turn around.” She finished with the buttons. “This was all supposed to happen tomorrow. Jacob was going to propose at the house. Obviously, he expected you to say yes.”

“My dad was coming?”

“Of course, he was coming. He loves you, and he wanted to give you away.”

“Oh, no! We can’t do it without him.” I ran out of the room. “Jacob!” I shouted.

I rushed into the living room to find everyone waiting by the archway. “Jacob! We can’t do it tonight!”

Faces dropped. He tilted his head.

Before he could speak, a booming voice came from the front entryway. “Where is that insensitive daughter of mine?”

I ran to the top of the stairs. “Dad?”

“Well, who else? Can’t have just anyone give you away.”

He reached the top of the stairs. We stood staring at each other. “The house looks good on you.”

Pamela and Jazzy came in the door behind him, stomping the snow off their boots. A driver was unloading gifts and bags, and putting them in the entryway.

I walked into his arms. “Thank you.”

He held me away from him. “Love looks good on you.”

Jazzy ran up the stairs to join him. “You look beautiful.”

“Mia said you wouldn’t be here until tomorrow. How did you get here so fast?” I asked, while holding Jazzy close.

“I didn’t want to risk not being here. When your brother told me the plan, I wanted to make sure I was here.”

I looked over my shoulder at Mach. He shrugged his shoulders.

I squeezed my dad tight, squishing Jazzy in the process. “Daddy.”

“Quit your cryin’. Where is that ungrateful son-in-law of mine?”

I followed quickly behind him. “We didn’t get married yet.”

He kept his charge into the living room.

“Jacob!” He practically bellowed.

“Sir?”

“Who do you think you are trying to refuse my gift?”

“I want the house to belong to Camille.” Jacob stepped toward him, and stood proudly in front of him.

“I told you it could be a wedding gift.”
