His face falls, a lone tear racing down his cheek, but even that little reaction doesn’t humanise him enough.

“Grius,” Lox says, finally taking a step forward to intervene. “Enough. You don’t know who this—”

Grius snarls, and a giant slab of rock comes racing through the air and slams into Lox. I have no idea where it’s come from, and that only makes him more dangerous. Lox groans under the weight, pinned to the ground, as he struggles to breath.

Oh no.

“Okay, enough,” I say, glaring at the man in front of me. My magicae reappears up my arms, different colours for the different bonds within me. Grius raises an eyebrow, an amused look on his face.

What is going on?

“He’s not being unreasonable on purpose,” she says, and I look at her through the corner of my eye. “He can’t control his emotions.”

“What’s your name?” I ask.

“Grius,” the man says, confused. I wasn’t talking to him, though, and ignore him. It’s not his fault I’m maintaining eye contact with him whilst talking to someone only I can see.

“Bella?” I ask, but she shakes her head.

“No, that’s my chicken,” she says, gesturing to the teddy. “I’m Lenvus. I was a light witch before I died.”

“Ah.”

“That’s why he blames Etrix,” she continues, looking at her mate sadly. “But Gri isn’t being this unstable on purpose. He’s struggling now that our bond has disintegrated, now that he’s alone with a fractured soul. He needs to find our third—”

“Your third?” I ask, and Grius’s nostrils flare as he realises I truly am talking to someone.

“Who are you talking to?” he snarls. “My mate is dead. You’re not talking to her.”

“We had another in our bond. If he can find them, he’ll be returned back to his normal self. He promised he’d find them, he promised he’d move on. But he lied.”

“Oh, Lenvus,” I whisper, reaching for her hand. I squeeze it as she bursts into tears, and Grius freezes. “He didn’t lie. He’s grieving, and if what you’re saying is true, his mind is fracturing.”

She nods, sniffling a little. It’s strange, seeing a ghost cry.

“She’s really here,” Grius says, and I nod slowly.

“She says to remember your promise,” I tell him. “To find your third. You need your third, Grius. Lenvus can’t move on until you do.”

Tears well up in both their eyes, and too many emotions overtake me from the pair of them.

“What is going on in here?” a familiar voice roars. I gasp, dropping Lenvus’s hand, and turn to meet the eyes of a man I’ve never seen in person before. He spots me, and seems just as surprised. “Zoe?”

“Vitalis?”

ELZORA

Murmurs race amongst the crowd, Lenvus tries to get my attention as Vitalis and I just stare at each other in shock. His dirty blonde hair is in a knot at the back of his head, loose strands framing his oval face.

“What are you doing here?” he asks, his jaw dropping and it highlights his cheek bones.

“What areyoudoing here?” I counter, and he grins.

“Does Necos know you’re here?” he asks, and I shake my head. “Well, fuck.”

“I’m with Etrix,” I say, pointing to the unconscious man on the floor. “We ran into a slight issue.”
