“Let me help,” he murmurs, and I nod gratefully. “Everyone out!” he shouts, and to my utmost surprise, everyone leaves. Not Grius, Lox, or Etrix since the latter two can’t move and the first one is lost in his sorrow.

I watch as Necos bends to the ground, and with a simple touch, the slab of rock on top of Lox disappears. He murmurs something under his breath, a beam of gold covering Lox before he helps him to his feet.

“Go away,” Vitalis says.

“But—” Lox turns to me, indecision written over his entire face before sighing and leaving the room.

“Grius,” Vitalis says, and I can’t tell whether he’s annoyed or not.

“Wait, don’t,” I say, placing my hand on his arm. “Can you see Lenvus?”

“No,” Vitalis says, scrunching his nose up. When I narrow my eyes, he sighs. “Not every witch in the same branch has the same powers, Zoe. I don’t have the ability to see those who reside on our Earth but belong to the Otherworld. Not like you do.”

“Oh.”

“Oh,” he teases. “It’s kind of rude to flaunt your abilities this way.”

“Really?” I ask, my nose wrinkling as I pout. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you.”

His eyes twinkle, and he winks at me. “Don’t be. I was teasing. What’s going on?”

I quickly fill him in, and he nods. He already knows about Lenvus dying, but he’s surprised to see Gruis here.

“Grius, you’re meant to be in counselling,” Vitalis says.

“He’s been refusing to open up,” I say, listening to Lenvus. “He discharged himself, and was coming here to ask for—”

“Don’t presume my mind,” Grius snarls, and he goes to advance but Vitalis stops him with a shimmery wall of golden energy.

I look at it in awe, my eyes darting over to his tall frame. He just winks.

“Continue,” Vitalis says.

“He wants a leave of absence,” I add before tears well up. I gasp, and shake my head. “No. Don’t give it!”

Gruis roars, but I lose him from my field of vision for a brief moment.

“I love you, Lenvus,” a man says. I blink a few times before realising it’s Grius, but he looks so different. He’s lost weight, his hair is scraggy and grimy, his clothes have holes in them.

The background is blurry, I can’t focus on anything other than the scene in front of me.

He keeps chanting the same spell over and over, but his magicae is revolting and won’t complete it.

He’s trying to end his life to be with hisanima nexum.

When it doesn’t work, he lets out a loud sob before throwing himself off the cliff. I peer over, and when I hear the splatter, I’m tugged out of the view.

“Zoe!” Vitalis calls, shaking me gently. “What’s wrong, little love?”

“You can’t do that,” I say, ignoring Vitalis and focusing on Grius. “You can’t kill yourself.”

Vitalis gasps, but he’s still not the priority.

“Lenvus says if you do that, if you leave your third to live a life without both their soul mates, that she can never forgive you.” My words are clouded with the husk of my tears, and I struggle so badly to hold my tears back from falling. “Please, Grius, don’t do this.”

“It hurts,” he screams, but he’s not mad at me. “You fucking left me.”

I close my eyes as his anguished words are directed towards the mate he can’t see. His feeling of being powerless, his horribly dark thoughts, everything he’s suffering with is hurled out as he berates the woman for dying, forcing her to feel his pain with him.
