“You failed to introduce yourself, Vex,” Etrix says.

“Vexus Coku,” Vitalis says.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Eirik snarls, and I freak out when he pulls his magicae to his hands. “You have one—”

“Soul witch,” Vitalis continues, just dismissing Eirik.

“Coku?” Ciar asks, and I note his lips twitch in amusement. “Like,CokuCoku?”

“Yes,” Vitalis replies, still grinning.

Etrix starts to laugh. Jasper frowns, as confused as I am as he looks between Vitalis and Eirik for answers.

“I don’t understand,” I say.

“My parents may or may not be wanted criminals for crimes they committed,” Vitalis says, and Eirik snarls.

“Crimes?” I ask, biting my lip.

“Like an assassination attempt on the King,” Vitalis says as everyone except Eirik bursts out laughing. “And they may or may not be in hiding as they avoid their execution.”

“Holy wow,” I whisper, looking at Eirik in surprise.

“Well, I personally don’t think they should be penalised for a failed attempt,” Vitalis says.

“Nah, fully agree,” Etrix says. “Which is weird because I don’t really want to agree with you.”

“I think they should be punished for failing,” Ciar says, and Ryes snickers.

“It is my duty—” Eirik starts.

“Duty?” Mael scoffs, rolling his eyes. “Fucking hell. Eirik, your dad is a knob. We’re literally not going to sit here and—”

“He’s the ruler of our—”

“Enough!” Necos snaps, slamming his hand down on the sofa, and I watch in amazement as strands of silver and gold magicae rush out, latching around Eirik, Mael, and Vitalis, and they get slammed into seats.

“I so want to learn that,” I whisper, and Zohar quietly chuckles in my ear.

“We are not going to let you take Vex into custody,” Necos says. “Especially not since you’d also need to arrest me and Etrix.”

“You know where they’re hiding?” Eirik asks, his tone deathly calm. I get tingles from the scathing look he’s shooting Necos’s way, and it’s scary because it’s not even directed at me.

“They’re not our only fugitives,” Necos replies with a shrug.

“So, how do we get an invite to this rebel lair of yours?” Ryes asks. “Because I’m more than happy to join your team.”

“You are?” Vitalis asks. “Well, you were correct, little love.”

“You betted on me?” Ryes asks, amused.

“No!” I protest. “I was just talking about how you’d all react.”

“And how did you think we’d act, Zoe?” Eirik asks, using his horrible distant and scary tone with me. “Did you think I’d be happy about finding out that my brother, and two of your mates, are criminals? Traitors? Did you think I’d be willing to sign my life over to the opposite side?”

“Um… no,” I reply, shaking my head.

“You didn’t?” he asks before rounding on his brother. “So if ouranima nexumis smart enough to realise that I’d fucking hate this, how could you do it? How could you betray our family?”
