I let him have his quick goodbyes with Zoe, standing there and tapping my feet the entire time, before he turns back to me.

I raise an eyebrow and grab his wrist. He sighs as if this is all just a giant inconvenience to him but lets me drag him through the shadows to my bedroom at the dorms.

“I’m sorry,” Etrix says as soon as we’re alone.

“Fuck off,” I snap, and he sighs. “You’re sorry? What are you sorry for?”

“Have you been taking lessons from Zoe?” he asks, a taunt on his face. Fine. Looks like we’re going to fight this out before we talk it out.

He comes to the same conclusion, or fuck, maybe he was there first. It doesn’t really matter.

He disappears, and I chase after him as we appear in the clearing we fought at two months ago after I beat the shit out of the annoying as fuck Blaze.

Light appears in his hands, but I attack first and smother him in darkness. I don’t know how long we fight for, but eventually, we both call it quits.

I’m struggling to breathe, covered in cuts, burns, and bruises, and he’s the same.

“You good?” he asks, heaving, and I nod. We stumble over to the tree, both of us flopping at the base. “I’m sorry.”

“If I had known… if you had told me, I’d have been there by your side.”

He turns to me in complete surprise, his amber eyes narrowing. “Really?”

“Really,” I reply. “You think I give a fuck about opposing the crown? You’ve isolated yourself from us for fucking years, and I’m furious at you. I told you this when it was about your dad and the fucking death threats, but I’m on your damn team.”

“I know,” he says, but I think this is the first time he’s actually believed it. “I’m sorry. I can’t undo the past.”

“Can you explain what you do?”

“Everything in my power to fuck my dad over,” he replies without hesitation. He bites his lip, a nervous tic that I rarely see from him.

“What?”

“So, something we’ve yet to share with the group…”

“What?” I demand, urgency filling my tone at the look on his face. “What are you keeping from us now, E?”

“Zoe’s uncle… Anomus… he’s the leader.”

And that’s when he falls unconscious.

Not because he was so worried he passed out, or his blood pressure fucked up, or anything like that.

No, it was because my fist smashed his face into a tree, and the force behind it knocked him out cold.

Now, I can admit my reaction was a little hasty, and mostly out of fear, but it also felt really fucking good.

I’m not sure how long we sit here, my breathing has returned back to normal, though, by the time he wakes back up, and he groans.

“That hurt, huh?”

“What…” he trails off and groans again. “Fucking cunt. This is why I wasn’t honest.”

“What? Because I punched you in your thick skull?”

“Because you’re a knob,” he snaps. He rubs his temples with his sausage fingers before relaxing back against the tree. “Yeah, well, he didn’t kill her parents.”

“No shit. I came to that realisation.”
