Nobody knows I’m the Primordial Princess, and even if they did, that would grantmepower and not him.

“Thank you,” Eirik says. “Are you going to arrange this with Headmaster Whisperfelt?”

“Absolutely. Now, I’ve told Professor Bellen that classes will resume on Monday, so you’re done for the day.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m not the enemy here, Zoe,” he says, gently. “I just want to do the job left to me by your grandmother. Please, come to me if you need anything.”

“I will,” I say, but even without the nose scrunch, I know I’m lying.

He dismisses us both, and Eirik opens a portal to home.

“You know the rule on those,” Mr Downey says, but Eirik just ignores him. Mr Downey decides not to fight it, and I follow Eirik through.

“Well, that went okay,” Eirik says, and I frown. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m worried about working with Necos,” I say, and he nods. “He had told me on Wednesday that he knew about me being the Primordial Princess.”

Eirik sighs, and I can feel the frustration even if he tries to hide it. “Why didn’t you mention that?”

“I forgot,” I say, tilting my head. But that doesn’t necessarily feel right. I don’t think I did forget. I think… I think I actually did mention it.

Eirik’s frowning now, likely hearing my jumbled thoughts. “It doesn’t matter who forgot,” he says, sounding just as confused as me. He rolls his shoulders, and shakes his head. “Okay, tell me exactly what he said.”

“He said that he knows who I am because Mr Downey sent him here,” I say, and he nods slowly. “That he can be trusted. I told him how Jasper doesn’t know this, and he didn’t reveal it to him, but I don’t know whether we can trust him with everything.”

“He’s one of your bonds, too, love,” Eirik says. “I’ll see if I can get a hold of him so that we can see what is what with him.”

“Thank you,” I reply, squeezing his hand. “Now, I’ve got an hour and a half before I need to meet Tien. Would you be willing to practice some spells with me?”

“I’d love nothing more,” he replies.

“So, you what… spent an hour alone with him, andthere was nobody home, and all you did was practice magicae?” Tien asks, her jaw about a millimetre from the floor as she gapes at me with wide eyes.

She crosses her arms in front of her chest, and raises one pink eyebrow in disbelief when I don’t immediately correct her. Right now, she looks identical to Ryes, down to the cheeky smirk and twinkle in her blue eyes.

“I’m really behind in my studies,” I say, causing her to burst out laughing. I mimic her pose, crossing my arms but lacking the effect she has. When she realises I wasn’t joking, she groans, banging her head against the wall.

“What?” I ask, my voice rising in pitch at her dramatic reaction.

“You’re adorable,” she says, shaking her head in bemusement with a smile. She keeps doing that, calling me some variation of cute before moving on with a new topic—even without finishing what we were discussing. She’s floaty, a trait of her air magicae, I’m sure, but she’s very sweet. “We can discuss how you’ve got some fine as fuck men, and you know my brother, once you’re kitted out to meet the King.”

“What do you think of him?”

“Nothing that I’d say in public,” she replies with a wink.

Her pink hair frames her face, and as she quickly looks left and right, I catch sight of the numerous piercings. She dyes her hair so often, always bright colours, but it suits her eclectic style when she’s out of uniform.

Her dry sense of humour matches Ryes’s and it’s kind of cute, especially since they didn’t grow up together. I love their bond, and even her teasing shows how much she loves him.

“You’re amazing,” I say, smiling at her.

“Yes, yes,” she says, beaming at me. “I’m pretty great. Now, what are you feeling in terms of length?”

“Length?”
