There’s no gold light leaking from my hands, nobody has been blasted with magicae, and I don’t think I’m about to die.

It’s a decent level of panic, not an overwhelming one.

“Until we figure out her type. Hopefully not more than a few weeks.”

“What if we never figure it out?” I ask, glancing at Eirik nervously.

“We will,” Mr Downey replies. “If you’re still struggling to do magicae in a few weeks, we’ll have to consult some professionals. The likelihood is that it will be the fault of your binding spell, and that’s something we need to look into.”

“I see.”

“But for now, let’s not panic. You’ll have a new timetable. Are there any classes you want to add or stop?”

“Um, Headmaster Whisperfelt stopped my classes with Ciar,” I say. I might have very little—read as none—dark magicae, but the time together was something we both enjoyed. “I’d like to continue that, if possible. I might not have much dark magicae, if any, but as everyone has explained—”

“You could access it because of your bond,” he finishes, nodding. “Very well. I think it’ll be very beneficial because it’ll help with you learning about the different types.”

“I agree,” Eirik says, and Mr Downey nods.

He gets a sort of shy expression on his face, a little blush coating his cheekbones as he quickly glances at the sheet in front of him before looking at me properly. “Talk to me about the other classes. Where are things going? I hope it wasn’t a mistake pairing you with youranima nexumto learn from.”

His green eyes harden a little, widening as best they can in their monolid shape, as he seems to get mad at the thought of my mates teaching me.

That’s weird.

“I think they’re going as well as they can be,” I say, glancing up at Eirik for support. He takes the silent plea, and starts recounting my progress.

My verylimitedprogress.

But from Eirik, it sounds like I’m raising the dead and curing cancer. He’s perfect that way, even if his embellishments are overselling me.

“I think that’s a solid effort in only four weeks,” Mr Downey says, calming some of the tension within me. “You’re doing really well, Zoe. I’m proud of you.”

“Thank you.”

“Now, let’s talk about this weekend and your visit to Court.”

“You know about that?” I ask, surprised.

“I know everything that concerns you, Zoe,” Mr Downey replies. I don’t know whether that’s meant to be reassuring or not, but I can most definitely promise that it’snot. “King Farglory is not someone to be trusted.”

“No, I know,” Eirik says, looking at me apologetically. But it’s information I already know. “We’ll keep her safe.”

“Well, safe would’ve beennotinvolving your father. Maggie managed to keep you hidden for twenty years, give or take, and within four weeks you’ve already been outed.”

“That was going to happen as soon as her mate status was realised,” Eirik says. “This isn’t a failure on your, or our, shoulders.”

“No, I understand that,” Mr Downey says with a nod. “We’ll need to see how things go before we can make a plan going forward. You need to be on your guard, though. We don’t know who is hiding in plain sight.”

“What do you mean by that?” I ask, looking between them both.

“Have you started covering the rebels with Professor Colabouniver?” Mr Downey asks, and I shake my head. “Well, that’s what I mean. There’s a revolution brewing, Zoe, and it’s one we want to keep you away from.”

“She’ll be safe,” Eirik says. “Both Etrix and I will be on watch, and we won’t let anything happen to her.”

“I’ll see what I can do about getting extra eyes at the dinner,” Mr Downey says.

What does he mean by that? How much power does he have? He’s a lawyer, and even if he’s now my legal guardian, it’s not like that awards him much power.
