I cannot contribute to that, even if I could help.

“ZoZo,” Ryes says, sounding in awe as he looks at me properly. I notice that in my frustration, my magicae is leaking out of me, and it seems to be some sort of beacon. That’s scary, even if it’s what my magicae wants.“You’re fucking gorgeous, baby.”

I grin, but now is not the time to accept pretty compliments from myanima nexum. It’s time to get everyone out safely.

“Mael, I need you to stay with me,” I say, turning to the one bond I have secured. He nods, and the golden tint to his face makes my magicae flare with possession. He’s being driven by his magicae more than himself right now, which is evident by the golden runes that are lit up. It doesn’t matter that he’s fully dressed, the runes are so bright you can see them shining through his top, and even slightly through the jeans. “The rest of you should probably find Eirik and Necos, so that we can get out of here. This is not our fight. Not yet.”

Or ever.

Another thought from Etrix that shows he knows more about this than he has let on.

My light witch has secrets, and I need to know what they are. We can’t keep living in the shadows of his lies.

The footsteps we heard just before come to a halt as five guards race into the room, each looking surprised to see me with the crown on my head.

But my magicae doesn’t let them stare for long. I can feel that they’re dangerous.

They’re here to hurt one of mine, and I won’t allow that to happen.

I can’t let that happen.

It bursts out of me, five identical blasts hitting them in the chests like it did to the other two only moments ago. They fall to the floor, and it’s obvious that they’re dead.

My heart rate speeds up, the palpitations echoing in my brain, but I do my best to ignore it.

There will be time for me to have a panic attack, but it can’t be now. Not when we’re fighting for our lives.

“Holy fucking shit,” Mael whispers, looking at me in surprise. “Looks like this is a competition, boys, and our mate is out to win.”

Etrix crouches in front of me, meeting my eyes as he cups my cheek. I lean into his touch, imitating his slow and steady breathing. “The goal isn’t to find the others, Zoe.”

“It is. It has to be,” I say pleadingly. “We need Eirik and Necos. I need them.” There’s a pull within me, and I’m aware I’m missing four… three different men.

Necos and Eirik are close by, and that’s too far for my liking.

But Jasper? He’s miles away, and my magicae hates it.

“I know you do, princess,” he says using a soothing tone that sort of irritates me. I don’t want to be placated. I want action. “But we need to put the crown back, and get out of here.”

“You know more about this attack than you’re letting on,” Ryes says, frowning at Etrix, who immediately shuts down. A blankness appears over his face, and he closes himself off within the bond. “What’s going on?”

“It’s rebels,” Etrix says.

“Well, I do love a good rebel kill,” Ciar says, rubbing his hands together and providing Etrix the distraction he needs to build his mental walls extremely high. Ryes narrows his eyes, but doesn’t comment further.

I make a mental note to talk to my air witch once things settle down because, whilst I piggyback off of his abilities, he’s the true virtuoso here. He’ll have heard a lot more than me, and maybe we can work together to figure out what Etrix is hiding.

“We’re going to get everyone out,” Zohar reassures me, and Etrix sighs, dropping his hand from my cheek. I take Zohar’s outstretched hand, and do my best to ignore the tingles that shoot through me when he uses his magicae to assess me.

“Okay, fine, we’ll go help Eirik and Necos,” Etrix says, sounding like it’s the biggest inconvenience ever. “But we need to be careful because my father is also launching an attack on me. We have more enemies than we know.”

“The guards?” Ciar hisses.

“The guards,” Etrix confirms.

Ciar lets out a dangerous noise, one that sounds inhuman, as he cracks his neck and summons a bunch of shadow people.

I look at them curiously, and Ciar shoots a wink my way. Ryes flinches away from them, and Zohar regards them with a cool look. But I’m the only one who seems truly intrigued.
