My eyes fly shut, the confidence I had only moments ago gone as my stomach riots at the scene that’s burned into my brain.

I take exaggerated deep breaths, determined not to throw up.

“It’s gone,” Zohar murmurs, gently rubbing my back as the others start laughing.

“You’re such a girl,” Ryes teases as I hesitantly crack open one eye just to check. When I see no yucky person, I open them fully and sigh. The floor is a little wet, so clearly Zohar has used his magicae to do some kind of cleaning.

I’m not going to ask because I truly cannot bring myself to care. Not if I want the contents of my stomach to stay in their correct place.

“Thank you, Zo,” I say, leaning up to kiss his cheek. He smirks, causing Ryes to groan. His jealousy knows no bounds.

It’s silly considering I give him just as much positive attention.

“Let’s keep going,” Mael says, taking my hand in his. “Good job, Ry.”

“It was me who killed him,” Ciar mutters, and Ryes laughs.

“Us,” Etrix corrects. “I helped you.”

Our main preoccupation right now is figuring out how to stay undetected because the moment we reach the end of the corridor, we’re cornered once again by a few guards.

“Where are they all coming from?” I mutter.

“These are all guards,” Mael tells me, and I nod. “This is Etonik’s fucking plan, the stupid prick. I bet he has people pretending to be rebels just so he can try and take Etrix out.”

It annoys me that these are the people who are meant to be protecting the crown, meaning Etonik, Eirik, and Etrix, and instead, they’re trying to hurt us.

They’re not just following orders, either, I can sense that they truly hate Etrix and want to harm him.

“But shouldn’t they be helping with the rebel attack?” I ask.

“Their absence won’t be noted,” Etrix tells me.

“How are they finding us?” Zohar snarls, after two more thuds occur. I’m trying to not look anymore because as much as I’m one of the murderers now, I’m struggling to face the repercussions of their actions.

Ofouractions. I’m not an innocent in this game of ours.

“You’re doing amazing, Ellie baby,” Mael says, squeezing my hands. “Now, duck!”

I’m tugged to the ground because, clearly, I didn’t duck fast enough, as a man with bright red hair approaches us. Both Ciar and Etrix have disappeared, likely using their respective methods to travel so that they can get a sneak attack in.

But without knowing how this team works together, that’s only a guess.

“Leave the princess, and I’ll let you—” the man starts, but before Zohar can attack him with his water or Mael can light him on fire, my magicae bursts from me, almost like I’m firing a gun.

Not that I’d know what that’s like.

I can feel the energy inside of this man, and it’s all wrong. It’s like tar, and his soul, it’s grimy. He’s a bad man, and it’s me he wants.

My power hits him, but rather than immediately killing him like the castle guards, it sort of sucks his energy out of him. I drain him dry, and the shell of the body drops to the floor. I flinch when my magicae dissolves, and I look at my hands in shock.

“You’re so fucking powerful,” Mael murmurs, kissing my head. He knows I’m feeling raw, anxious, even, and he cuddles me in close, giving me the love and reassurance he can.

Ciar appears in a wall of smoke, looking at us in amusement. “Now is not the time for a snuggle party.”

“I can’t believe that you’re talking about snuggles at a time like this,” Zohar teases.

“I cleared the east wing,” Ciar says, causing Mael and Ryes to let out identical whoop sounds. I wish I could share their enthusiasm. “We can get to the dining room that way.”
