“Torturing them is doing nothing,” Zohar says, having walked over with me.

“It’s helping me lose some of the rage,” Ciar replies with a shrug.

“End it,” Zohar says, shaking his head. “It’s time to get back to Zoe and Mael. I want her home and away from this place before King Farglory shows back up with his people.”

“He makes a good point,” Etrix adds, clasping his hand on Ciar’s shoulder. The two of them share an intimate look before Ciar nods.

“Ryes,” Eirik calls, and I turn to look at him. “Stop it.”

I hate that the elemental prick can read my mind. This blasted bond that I had to create so they could all share in my ability to read Zoe’s mind fucks me over sometimes.

Eirik doesn’t like the implication that Etrix is fucking Ciar, even if I find it hilarious.

Okay, fine, it wasn’t an intimate look.

Ciar kills the men, and I pout at not having even gotten a turn before he ended it. But it drops just as fast because this means we’re going back to Zoe.

“You happy?” Eirik asks, and we all turn to him, but he’s focused on Necos. “Is it clear?”

“Yeah,” Necos replies with a nod. “I’ve created a copy of the footage, and then erased it.”

A copy for Eirik, and a copy for them.

Hm. It seems that Necos is keeping secrets, too. Who is thethemhe’s referring to?

“Now, we’re heading back to Zoe,” Eirik says. “She does not need to know what we’ve done, not unless she specifically asks—although we all know she won’t.” He glares at us all in turn until we nod. Only then is the pompous prick satisfied. “Great, let’s go.”

We don’t bother with walking through the halls, not now that the castle has been cleared of rebels—or you know, the fun fucks who give me a good fight. Instead, Eirik opens a portal and we step through it, appearing in the corridor just before the vault.

The six of us walk up to the vault, not a single boobytrap going off since we have both Etrix and Eirik with us, and Eirik lets us in with the passcode.

I bet the passcode to this place was his first words.

“You’re just in time,” Mael says, his voice sounding hoarse as he cradles ouranima nexumin his lap.

“What the fuck happened?” Ciar roars as we all lock in on the body just behind them. He’s burning, and the scent of blood is prominent in the air.

“Acavea?” Necos demands, and Mael nods solemnly.

“Shit,” Eirik groans. “How did… what the fuck happened?”

“Zoe used herprimordiumto get the crown out of the vault,” Zohar says, surprising Mael and us. My breath is a sharp inhale as I cringe inside.

“She did,” Mael whispers. “I was handling him, but she… she was going to…”

“She was going to destroy herself to destroy him,” Necos fills in, and my heart stops.

My heart. Fucking. Stops. Beating.

I don’t breathe, not when Mael nods, not when Eirik tries to get my attention.

The only thing that matters is that her chest is moving, that her eyes are fluttering beneath her closed lids, that she’s alive.

She’s alive.

“Ryes,” Ciar snarls as a stinging feeling hits my cheek. I meet his eyes, and he gives me an assisting look, his dark eyes raking over my figure.

I don’t know what he sees, I don’t have it in me to care.
