“Decipula,” he commands, and I feel vines growing out of the ground and the walls to hold me in place. “Obstructionum!” Another spell he’s using to incapacitate me.

The moment I am free, I’m knocking that smug smirk off his face. I’ll do what he has done to me tenfold.

“Elzora will be fine without you,” he says, kneeling in front of me. He’s panting slightly, not truly winded but definitely strained. His shirt is rumpled, torn in a few places, and his bright blonde hair is a mess, covered in bits of rubble and mud.

His words were meant to be a reassurance, but they’re more of an insult.

She’s fine without you.

She doesn’t need you.

You’re nothing.

I look into his bright blue eyes, the colouring identical to the ones I saw in my mate not even a week ago, and glare at him. He deserves to see the full weight of my fury, my hatred for him.

Her eyes are perfect. I could stare into them forever.

His? Well, he’s lucky if he’ll be able to see again once I get my hands on him.

He smooths out my hair, and I add snapping his wrist to my list of punishments. How dare he fucking touch me when he’s denying me the other half of my soul.

“Trust me, she’s got eight other bonds to fuel her magicae right now. She needs you alive, and if you rush to her side right now… that won’t be the case for very long. You need to think smart here.”

“She needs me,” I repeat, it’s the only thing I can say. I understand his point, I truly do, but everything inside of me is revolting.

She needs my power, and my magicae is angry at me for not giving it to her.

My soul is screaming in pain, and I’m the only one who can end its suffering.

But what she truly needs from me, is to stay away.

It’s just hard to remember that.

Smoke covers me, and I frown before I hear the door open. Ah, he’s protecting me, even from our own men.

“Sir,” a man says, and I watch as my mentor turns to the voice. “The infiltration at the castle went exactly how we planned, aside from one thing.”

The voice gets closer, and I spot Gusto just a few metres in front of me. He’s short, bright ginger hair, and usually comes with a weasel in hand.

Literally. He has a pet ferret that often wraps around his neck.

He’s an earth witch, and one of the only ones I can truly stand. He’s polite, quiet, and an excellent witch.

“What is that?” he asks, and I can hear the anger in his tone. We didn’t have much time to prepare for this, so no matter what has gone wrong, it doesn’t matter.

“Etrix has yet to check in,” Gusto says. His calm tone is a direct opposition to the way I react. I let out a roar as I try to fight the vines. The man doesn’t see me, not when I’m hidden in the shadows, but that doesn’t stop me from trying.

Etrix has missed his check-in because he’s with my mate. He’s getting to live the life I want. He’s getting to spend time with Zoe, to have her love, whilst I’m trapped here getting only stolen moments on a night time.

Moments she hates being part of.

“Etrix is fine,” my mentor says. “I’ll speak to him soon. Did anyone touch the Princess?”

“No,” the man says, and that helps the fight in me settle, even just for a moment. “But she did take out one of our men.”

“Only one?” he asks, amused.

“Her magicae was targeting the crown guards for the most part. She was surrounded by her men, and whilst they were doing everything in their power to keep her safe, she was attacking on her own accord, too.”
