I don’t know if he’s fighting the bond, or if he’s truly not used to being around people being this happy.

When I look at him more intently, a blush covers his cheeks, and he gives me a bashful smile as he runs his hand through his fluffy brown hair.

“Well done,” he says softly. And then, as if realising that he was being too nice, he shuts his face down and looks away.

But I’m still too elated to care. I’ve struggled with this task over the last few sessions, and when Jasper had to cancel on Monday, I pouted a little—a lot—instead of practising on my own.

I thought he was just trying to avoid me, but he did text me and reassure me he just had an exam in another class.

Speaking of texts… he’s been texting me each morning, and evening, just to get to know me. It’s strange, but I kind of like it.

Today’s question revealed his collection of meplese. Now, obviously I’m from Earth, so I had no idea what this was, but it’s very similar to herb collecting.

Except they’re magicael herbs that have been made into potions.

It’s intriguing, and he promised to loan me one so I could use it on the guys.

I’m kind of scared to do that.

“Focus,” he murmurs as I turn to the next plant to repeat the task. Now that I know I can do it, I’m ecstatic.

Today has been the first day where I could just let go and do what needs to be done.

Because Jasper knows now. He knows all about me being a soul witch, and there’s nothing to hide.

It means I can practice my magicae without fear of being found out and then being brutally murdered. Not that anyone said it would be brutal, it’s just a feeling I have.

At least in this room, I am safe. With Jasper.

“Youaresafe here,” he murmurs, and I nod. The bright gold runes on his skin show that, even if his thoughts and feelings do not. “Now, there’s something happening in my greenhouse that I need your help with. Could you come with me to have a look?”

I nod, and follow him through.

“Have a look around,” he says, stepping back so that his energy doesn’t taint the plants. “Have a feel. See if you can rationalise it.”

I do as he asks, listening to the plants, and I feel a jolt when I realise what is going on.

“The plants are dying,” I say quietly. I look at his collection of plants with a scowl on my face, hating that they’re struggling.

“They’re growing languish, yes,” Jasper says with a small nod. “But we can save them if we work together. They’re weak on their own, but we can revitalise them.”

Revitalise.

Vitalis.

Who or what is Vitalis?

“What?” Jasper asks, his brows drawing down in confusion as his hazel eyes spear me, studying me as he slowly explains. “Revitalise just means to re-energise something, to give it new life. I want to do that with the plants. Now that we know you have more power than I first thought, I want to do the most good with it.”

“I know that,” I say, confused. My brain isn’t worried about that word. It’s focused on Vitalis.

“What is a Vitalis?” Jasper asks, and I can hear him getting frustrated.

That’s something that hasn’t changed even with the bond we now share. His thoughts are still full of disdain, with the occasional hint of longing.

I try to ignore it, though, knowing he’s entitled to his feelings, and it’s not his fault that I can hear him.

“I don’t know,” I reply with a sigh. “It’s just… it’s something I can remember.”
