A mask of indifference settles on my face so I don’t display the hurt I feel. Why didn’t she tell us about this letter?

Why is this something she’s now telling him without telling us first?

“What did it say?” Mr Downey asks carefully.

“To tell you a code. PK45 Lemon.”

“That’s what it says?” he demands, his voice now urgent and panicked.

“Yes. I don’t know what it means,” she says, and this is the first time her voice betrays her as lying. Her eyes dart my way, widening in terror, as she must hear me, before she feigns a yawn and rubs at her eyes.“Thanks for not outing me, RyRy.”

“That’s okay,” he replies, shock displayed on his face. “Thank you for trusting me enough to tell me.”

She nods, and he gestures for us to go inside. It’s not until we’re on our floor that I glare at her.

“Why didn’t you tell us about the letter?”

“Because there isn’t a letter.”

“So what is the code?” Ciar asks.

“Safety protocols for me, I think,” she murmurs. “My grandma was there and asked me to pass on the message. I couldn’t not.”

“Fair enough,” I reply, shrugging. “Sorry. I was a little sensitive.”

“Don’t be. It’s been a very weird night,” she says, laughing. “Can we go to bed now? For real this time?”

“Yes,” I promise.

“Wait, what the fuck has gone down tonight?” Etrix demands.

She sighs, and I can see the exhaustion on her face.

“I’ll tell him,” Ciar says, nodding for her to go to sleep. “I’ve got it,mo sholas, go get some rest.”

“Thank you,” she replies, tugging me to where her bedroom is. As soon as the door closes, she looks over at a spot near the armchair. “You’re going to want to leave.”

“Who?” I ask.

But when your girl can see ghosts, she’s not always going to be talking to you. Fucking hell. I pull off my shorts and get into her bed, willing to wait whilst she has her conversation.

It’s not the most interesting thing, especially since I can only understand half of what’s being said, and Zoe says goodbye before climbing into bed with me.

“No more night wanders,” she says softly.

“I’ll tie you to the bed if I have to.”

She bursts into giggles, thinking I was joking.

I wasn’t, but we don’t need to get into that.

“You’re doing really well,” Jasper says, standing behind me as I slowly drain some of the life out of the sunflower in front of me. “Just a little more… keep going… going… stop!”

“I did it,” I say, beaming at him as I clap my hands in excitement. His expression of pride seems awkward, and his lips pinch together as he takes me in.
