"Con still asleep?" Conrad asks, walking up beside me and putting his arm around me.
"Yes, Donna's in the house."
"Let me guess, you pawned the gift wrapping onto her."
"No!” I protest. "She offered, and I couldn't refuse.”
He chuckles, leaning down to kiss me. "Your parents arrive in a few days; add Donna and Burt into the mix. Are you ready for another highjacked holiday?"
He's right. Even if Conrad and I have found a better balance to spend time with each other during the holidays, we've yet to find a way to prevent the takeover. But honestly, I don't mind. The first year was tough, but the last few have been better. Having a house full of the family always warms my heart.
"I'm ready. And my parents have been dying to see Con again."
"We just visited them at Thanksgiving."
"It's their first grandchild. Can you blame them?"
Conrad wraps his arm around me; we watch Opus eat his hay in the snow. Through the years, I still look back at that first Christmas together and shake my head at how I perceived what the perfect Christmas would be like. I was so naive and didn't realize just how lucky I was. As long as I have a family that loves me, they can hijack any holiday.
