Brenna exhaled, drank from her glass of water, and stared out the window.

“Miss.”

She turned her head and saw a uniformed cop. Her first instinct was fear until she calmed down. She’d done nothing wrong.

The guy was huge and frickin’ hot, which didn’t help keep her heart rate steady. “Officer. Can I help you?”

“No, ma’am. I just saw you come in and wondered if you needed any help.”

God, this town was great. She’d never seen anything like it before in her life. “Um, no, sir.”

“My name’s Hunter, and I’m actually the sheriff in town.”

“Oh, sorry. My name is Brenna.”

“Where are you staying tonight?” he asked.

She smiled. “I haven’t gotten that far. Where’s the nearest motel or B&B?”

“Well, let’s see, there’s a Motel 6 a few blocks over or a Hampton Hotel in the next town, which isn’t far from here, but it’s the snazziest one between the two.”

“I’ll try the Motel 6. Thank you for your help.”

He tilted his head to the side and studied her. “So, are you sticking around?”

“I can’t.”

“I saw you and Fiona talking, and I’m pretty good at reading lips. You have a stalker?”

Her eyes widened. Damn, he was good. “Unfortunately.”

He pointed to the booth on the other side of the table. “Do you mind if I sit?”

“No, not at all.” She waited for him to sit. The man was the hottest guy she’d ever talked to, and it was weird that she didn’t feel attraction. Maybe she was too exhausted, but still, she wasn’t cold and dead, for God’s sake.

“I think you should consider staying here until things have been taken care of.”

“Oh, I couldn’t. The man is crazy. You don’t want him in your town, Sheriff.”

He chuckled. “I’ve dealt with crazy before, Brenna. You’d be surprised what this town can do to protect you.”

Brenna bit her lip. God, it was tempting. The thought of running from state to state made her beyond anxious and fearful that she’d never be able to settle in one place. “Are there any jobs open?”

“I’m sure we can find you something. The town is bigger than you’d expect.”

“So far, this is the nicest town I’ve ever visited. When Idrove in town, it was like, I don’t really know how to explain it, but it felt like I’d come home or something.”

“Here you go, honey,” Fiona said and placed the plate in front of her.

Brenna looked down at the huge plate. “Oh my, Fiona, this looks so good.”

“You’ll enjoy it if you like beef.”

She laughed. “Oh, I’m definitely a carnivore.”

“Then you’ll fit right in this town. I don’t know if a vegetarian has ever lived here.” Fiona chuckled. “I’ll be back to check on you. Sheriff, you need anything?”

He looked at Brenna. “Do you mind if I sit with you and have a piece of pie?”
