“No, I don’t mind. Would you like some of this? I’ll never be able to eat it all.” She would have worried that he was coming on to her, but she didn’t see the heat of attraction for her in his eyes either.

“No, but thank you. I just got done eating.” He turned to the waitress. “Fiona, I’ll have a piece of apple pie and coffee. Thank you.”

“I’ll be right back.”

He pointed to her plate. “Eat.”

She grinned at his stern order. “Yes, sir, Sheriff.”

He snorted.

Brenna listened to him talk about the town and people, and the more he talked, the more she wanted to stay. She ate half of the plate and sat back with a groan.

“So, what do you think about staying here?” Hunter asked.

“At least tonight I am. I’m too tired to go any further or make any decisions.”

He nodded. “I understand that, but think about the fact these men, the stalkers, don’t usually give up. So would you besafer running from state to state and never know if he’s caught up to you until you see him, or stay in our town where I can guarantee you’re safe?”

She grinned. “You’re hard to say no to.”

He shrugged. “I’ve heard that before.”

“Let me get some sleep, and we can talk about it tomorrow. Okay?”

“Deal.”

She set down a few bills and stood. “Bye, Fiona. Thank you.”

“I hope to see you again, Brenna.”

“If the sheriff gets his way, I will be.”

“He’s a smart man,” Fiona said.

Brenna laughed. “Hey, now. You’re all ganging up on me.”

“Naw,” Hunter said. “We just know what’s best for you.”

She caught the grin on his face and rolled her eyes.

He tipped his head toward the door. “Follow me, and I’ll take you to the motel in town.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I know. I’m doing it anyway.”

“Has anyone told you that you’re kind of bossy?”

He chuckled. “Oh, maybe a few times.”

She snorted, got in her car, followed him down a few streets, and pulled into a parking spot next to him. She got her overnight bag and purse out before locking the door.

“Get a good night’s sleep and meet me at the diner at ten.”

“Yes, sir, Sheriff.”

“I wish everyone were as easy as you,” he said and laughed. “Go on. I’ll wait until you’re inside.”
